upgrade from 2014

Thread needs solution

I purchased the TIH2016 upgrade from TIH2014, downloaded the file, and began installation. immediately this appears (see attachment)

installation restricted, cannot remove

Acronis True Image Home 2011 (version 14.0.6696)

how do I correct this? I have 2014, and would hate to lose all my scripts and backups if an uninstall/reinstall is required

Vega, the recommended method of upgrading between different versions of ATIH would be to perform a 'clean install' of the new product version, which would result in all your backup task scripts also being lost but importantly, you would not lose any of your backup images.

The image you captured suggests that the older ATIH 2011 version was never fully uninstalled when you previously upgraded to 2014 (or an earlier version).

You could try saving a copy of your Scripts folder contents - this is found in C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Scripts on Windows Vista and above systems - but you need to realise that just restoring the Scripts on their own will not bring back the backup history as this is held in the Database files.  I would not recommend restoring the database files if these were created with earlier versions of the software.

To perform a clean install of the new ATIH 2016 product softare, you should first run the Acronis  2015-16 Cleanup tool - there is a link in my signature below - this will work for all versions from 2010 to 2016.  Once the tool has finished, then install the 2016 Upgrade version again - this will ask you for two serial numbers, one for 2016, one for the 2014 version you are upgrading from.

thanks Steve,

I purchased an upgrade, would the license still be valid? or will this create a problem?

The license for your upgrade will be fine - I have had plenty of the same over the years as I moved from one version to the next.  You can confirm your serial numbers by signing in to your Acronis Account where you can also download a text file with a copy of these too if you wish.

it seems something has gone wrong, I have uninstalled TIH2014, rebooted, and still got the install error.

I ran the cleanup tool, rebooted, still no luck.

CCleaner found nothing in the registry.

any ideas what to try next ..............

I'm on Win7 64bit, using an administrator account

thanks in advance

Vega, did you ever have 2011 installed prior to 2014? Seems like something is still left over from long ago that is causing an issue - as the error suggest, it may have been installed with another account, but only for one particular account (perhaps not your current one?)  I've never seen this type of message before though so can only speculate.

Check to see if something is still listed in any of the directories below and manually delete them if they do.  You may have to take ownership of the folders if you are not able to delete them with your admin account as they stand now (assuming something is still there).  Then run CCleaner again (a couple of times until it shows no registry entries left) reboot one more time and then try to install 2016 by right clicking and selecting "run as administratror" (even though already logged in with an admin account).

C:\Program Files (x86)\Acronis     C:\Program Files (x86)\Common\Acronis     C:\Program Files\Acronis     C:\Program Files\Common\Acronis     C:\ProgramData\Acronis

You should try running the cleanup utlity for 2011, 2012, qnd 2013 found in the link below:

https://kb.acronis.com/content/34876

Please follow all instructions concerning use of the cleanup tool.  You will need to uninstall 2016 first and then run the tool.  It would probably be a good idea to stop all running Acronis services found in Windows services in task manager before uninstallong the 2016 product.  This will insure that remnants of the app are kept to a minimum.

thanks to all for the suggestions .........

nothing worked, 2011 was a full version, 2014 was an upgrade. the only way to remove the remenants of 2011 was to delete all the thousands of Acronis regestry entries .............. tedious and time consuming, but done, and 2016 is installed.

Bummer - but glad you got it sorted out!

I've gotten in the habit of clean uninstalling and installing new for each major version of ATIH - just in case as it's been more reliable going that route.  Even when it comes to Windows upgrades, I usually do a clean OS install after the upgrade (for the move to Win 10) once it was licensed.  I let the last Windows 10 v 1511 upgrade run for a bit since it was an upgrade from Win10 to Win10, but it turns out it's just like every other OS upgrade I've been though.  Just last week, out of the blue, all kinds of weird stuff with the windows app store saying it needed an app to open itself and other Windows appstore apps not launching (despite trying everything I could find on the web resolve and several frustraing hours), just reminded me to start fresh again.   It's sad, but it's become less time consuming to rebuild the OS from scratch (for me) every now and then, than to troubleshoot when I know that rebuilding is ultimately going to save me time and provide a healthier system (for awhile).

Ditto Bobbo uninstall old versions and install new version clean!  Saves headaches like these.
