Upgrade Acronis TI 2015 to 2016

Thread needs solution

After expeperiencing many problems on one of my Windows 7 PC's with Acronis TI 2015, I have the option to download the 2016 version as an upgrade. I have two choices: I can download a file, or download a bootable media. If I were to select the bootable media, will I be able to download it directly to a DVD on my PC, giving me a full "Acronis TI 2016 Installation Disk"? If that was possible, is it safe to install the 2016 version without uninstalling the 2015 version? My fear is that my 2015 version may be corrupt, and what may be wrong with it may carry over to the 2016 version unless I uninstall ithe 2015 version via windows 7 first.

You can't download directly to a DVD. Download the bootable media to your PC's hard drive then burn it to DVD. Since you are having issue with TI 2015 it is best to unnstall it first. You can us the cleanup utility to remove it https://kb.acronis.com/content/48668.

Charles,

As thomasjk mentioned, yes, download the bootable media first and then burn it to a disk - you'll have to do this with Windows or a third party application like imgburn or something like that.

Then, as thomasjk mentioned, do the cleanup to ensure 2015 is compeltely removed, reboot and reinstall 2016 from fresh (be sure to download the latest version from your account and then install it by right clicking  and holding shift to select "run as administrator" - this gives the highes privilges for installation). Once installed and licensed again.  I would then create bootable media from the application - preferably to a USB flash drive (if you have one - 1 or 2GB drive is all you need).  However, you can create an .iso or point it to a blank disk and it will burn and create it on the fly.

Thanks for your replies. If I download the Bootable version and burn it to a DVD using windows 7, will it be the same as an Acronis TI 2016 installation disk that would come in a box?

For the most part yes.  However "boxed" versions are often older - you want the most recent version available from your online account as they usually have bug fixes and better compatibility for newer hardware.  The most recent version is 6027 (ATIH 2016) which came out mid-December.  We're expeting another release sometime next month as well.

– I downloaded the Acronis TI 2016_6027 ISO file and burned it to a DVD

When I tried to start the Installation procedure from the dvd I burned, I clicked on the application file “bootmenu”

It came back with the following message:

The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you are running. Check your computer system information to see whether you need an x869 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher.

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit Operating System.

Thank goodness I did not remove my Acronis 2015 version.

How do I fix this problem?

Charles, I believe that there may be a misunderstanding here, the ISO image available from the Acronis website within your Acronis Account is not installation media but rather is a bootable rescue / recovery media image which can be used to boot your system and recover from a failed system scenario.

Given the information you have provided, I would also highly recommend that you uninstall your ATIH 2015 application then run the Acronis Cleanup tool advised by Thomasjk (link is also in my signature below), before then running the ATIH 2016 installation program AcronisTrueImage2016_6027.exe to effect a clean install of the new product.

Again, I appreciate the time and interest you have all given to me about my problem. it certainly looks like cannot create an installation DVD. At the moment, it appears the safest action plan for me to take would be to uninstall Acronis TI 2015 via the windows uninstall, followed by the installation of the 2016 version. It appears there may be some risk running the Acronis Cleanup tool. (It is highly suggested I have system backups in case something goes wrong). I really need a good working PC every day, even though I have a backup PC for most of my work, especially during Income tax time. I need to think about this a little more before taking action.

Hi Charles - I don't suspect anything would go wrong - removing and reinstalling ATIH is pretty straight forward.  However, as you are using ATIH 2015 licensed and would be upgrading to a 2016 trial that you could not just revert back to,  a backup would allow you to restore to before the trial was installed if you decide not to move forward with 2016. Alternatively, you'd just have to live with knowing that you may have to manually uninstall 2016, reinstall 2015 and create new backup tasks again - not too painfu either.

I always recommend making a backup before any major changes (this is not really a major change, but could be for you if you don't want to go thorugh setting up new backup tasks if you revert back to 2015).  With any application change, there is "risk" for something going wrong or being unexpected.  I work in IT and we install software all of the time with no problem.  However, there are times where standard installs (even Windows updates) cause a machine to go haywire, so we make it rule to backup systems before doing any work on them now. It is slower in the sense that backups take time, but they sure savem time if you have them to resort to "just in case".  That is what put me onto Acronis in the first place and it has been very reliable for this purpose.

Bobbo:

Are you suggesting the the free Acronis Upgrade put into my account by Acronis tech support will be a Trial Version, and not the full version? I was given keys to go along with the downloads. That certainly was a suprise. There is no way I can ask the Acronis people about this without spending hours on a chat session or paying a $20 fee to request  support that may take many more hours to get.

If you have been given a free upgrade and the serial keys you should be good to go. Just download the installation file from your account. It was not clear in your original post that you had a free upgrade which is why the trial version was mentioned.

I was not aware you were given the upgrade and license keys. I assumed you were considering upgrading and had not purchased yet, as that is normally the case. If you have been given keys to upgrade to 2016, I would do it as it brings better stability and current support. I see no advantage to sticking with 2015 if you have access to 2016. You may want to consider removing 2015 and installing 2016 fresh though. Upgrades are supported but seems like fresh installs cause less issues down the road for some.

After having and reporting the many problems I was having with the 2015 version, the Acronis people sent me an e-mail saying they put 2016 upgrades in my account. It consisted of the ability to download the Installation File or the Bootable Media. In addition, they sent me two Product Keys because I have two PC's running Acronis 2015. I already downloaded the two keys. I would think if I downloaded the Install File, and executed it using one of the two keys, it would be a full install.

While I was on the chat session, they sent me an "AcronisTrueImage2016_6027.exe" file to use. I could either use this one, or download what may be the same file directly from my account and use that one. Any thoughts about this? I would delete the 2015 version first via windows, hoping enough would be deleted for the 2016 to work OK. I know you recommend running the cleanup routine, but I still fear this may cause some other problem.

Charles, if you already have the AcronisTrueImage2016_6027.exe file then there should be no need to download this again from your account.

In terms of deleting the 2015 version, please do not just delete this via Windows Explorer, but rather go into the Control Panel, Programs & Features and uninstall the program that way.  The alternative method to using the Acronis Cleanup tool is to get hold of a copy of the free Revo Uninstaller and use that to perform the uninstall of ATIH 2015, this will do very much the same as the Acronis Cleanup tool in removing all remnants of the product to allow a clean install of 2016.

My plan was to delete the 2015 version via the Control Panel as you suggested. I would never try to delete it by manually deleting files. When I first installed the 2015 version on this particular PC using the boxed installation disk, it hung up for some reason. I then tried to uninstall it using the uninstall routine on the same install disk which also gave me a problem. After doing checkpoint restarts, I was finally able to install it from the same install disk. It did, however, say there was a later version and offered to install the updated version, which I did. I continued to have problems only on that one PC. I loaded the 2015 version on my other windows 7 PC using a different boxed install disk. The install went normal, and it still works fine on that machine.

Hopefully, if the install of 2016 works on my failing machine, I will upgrade my other PC as well using the same install program but with a different Key.

I am still waiting to be sure my TurboTax returns are alive and well.

Thanks for your time and interest
