Windows update does not run after full restore
Hello,
I have good experience with Acronis over the years but since Windows 8.1 it gets annoying.
I did a full disc backup with VSS not active and tried to do a restore. First I had to create a Windows PE disc with Acronis Plugin.
I managed to do this and could do the restore. So far it worked with some difficulties.
But now Windows Update does not work any more. And yes the time is maintained correctly and I used the flag "Recover disc signature".
The status I used for the backup had no issues at all with Windows update, but the backup definitely has. I tried a manual correction via stopping
the services and clearing the "Software distribution" but nothing will help. I can still try the Windows cab to solve the issue but I doubt that it will
succeed. So if Windows Update is not running with a backup any more the backup and the software is useless!
Any additional ideas?
Regards
Willi

Hello,
First, I rarely use this site and also experience problems with not getting email replies from other users. Just happened to be on it today. Anyway, I had MAJOR problems with this issue with Windows 7 updating and it wasn't Acronis software. The older the back-up in time the more there were problems. It seems that if all optional windows updates are not installed along the way (I usually ignored them) then that either causes the problem or makes it worse. The first few times time I solved it (after an upper level Microsoft tech messed with my computer for 3 hours and ruined the OS), I just left it trying to update overnight, and that did the trick. But then later on after another reinstall of an older image, things got worse. I searched and finally found an article (link below) that suggested manually installing a group of 4-7 updates from last summer, along with running a Microsoft fix it tool for updating, and together, and not just using the tool, that fixed the problem. After that I've always installed all optional Windows 7 updates. Good luck!!!!!

Jacob, thanks for sharing your experience with this Windows UPdate issue. Willi is on Windows 8.1 but the principles you suggest should still be relevant and worth a try.

Hello Steve,
Many Thanks in advance I will try and tell if it worked

Hello Steve, hello Jacob,
I know both tools and just tried them after stopping the Windows update service and renaming the Software Distribution folder.
At the moment I'm waiting for the system and afterwards I will try to restart Windows Update manually.
1) First Tool can be found deep in the Windows Update section and refers to Jacob's link
2) Second Tool is the general Troubleshooter which can be reached via searching for it in the start menue and should be started as an Admin

Hello once again,
@Jacob your first link is on W7 and I am on W8.1, so a bit different.
On the other I will let run the Windows update overnight according to your advice.
