Windows update preparing to install

Thread needs solution

Yes I had to restore my computer from a backup and now windows update just keeps saying, "Preparing to install" when I do windows update.  It will just say this forever I think.  It never seems to get past this screen.  Windows update worked fine before the restore.  Anyone else had this issue?

Using Windows 8, 8.1 or 10?  Click on the search icon and type in Troubleshooting.  From the list that appears look for System and Security, click on Fix problems with Windows Update.

This was a problem I ran into with the first round of Windows 10 upgrades to the official release of Windows 10.  I had luck clearing the failed updates and getting them to run again following the instructions posted at http://www.bidnessetc.com/48950-microsoft-windows-10-setup-stuck-at-preparing-to-install-heres-the-fix/

This fix can be applied to other versions of Windows as well and I have a feeling it may solve your issue if Enchantec's method doesn't already do the trick.

I'm using Windows 8.1 and yes i've tried that and it works.  But I have to do it everytime I get updates after I restored.

There's an automated fixit application as well as manual instructions.

One of the most common problems with Windows update not working is that of incorrect time set on the machine.  Making certain that the time set in Windows and in the machine bios are correct may fix your issue.
