ati2017 migrate new dell win10 hdd to ssd
Hi, am hoping for little direction. I just purchased a new dell win 10 pro with a 1TB hdd. I also purchased separately a samsung evo 500 gb sata SSD. I was going to just use the samsung migration software, but their software specifically said it will not copy the manufactures hidden / utility / restore partition.
So here are some of my questions:
1. Is there any special precautions with ssd different from backup/restoring hdd's?
2. I assume I would be best to do a full disk backup to a usb ext drive, then restore to the ssd
3. should I do a bit level backup or a normal/file backup
4. I have not yet done the first startup boot of the win 10 dell, is it ok to backup before 1st boot?
5. I will be downgrading in size 1TB(280gb in use) to 500GB, Is this ok?
Thanks!
p.s. Do I need to install the samsung "magic" software on the running system when done to optimize the ssd performance, or does windows do that just as well?

Joseph, welcome to these User Forums.
The first action that you need to perform is to create the ATI 2017 bootable Rescue Media and check that this will boot your new Dell computer successfully and you can see your current 1TB HDD drive.
Note: when booting the new computer, you should be choosing the UEFI boot option for the rescue media.
If you already have ATI 2017 installed on another computer, then you can create the Rescue Media there - I would recommend using a USB stick (size between 1GB and 32GB max, formatted as FAT32).
If you do not have ATI 2017 installed, then you can download a CD image .ISO file from your Acronis account web page then burn this to media or use a utility program to write the ISO contents to a USB stick (using such as Rufus or ISOtoUSB etc).
Once you have the Rescue Media working, then make a full Disk & Partitions backup of the internal 1TB HDD drive in the Dell to an external USB drive.
Check the log in the Rescue Media to ensure all was OK with the Backup.
Next, shutdown the Dell and remove the HDD then replace it with the new Samsung EVO SSD drive.
Boot the Rescue Media again and Restore the Backup image from the external drive to the new SSD. If you just select the top Disk option box, you should not need to configure the size of any individual partitions in the backup, and ATI will automatically resize the image to fit the smaller SSD size.
Check the log in the Rescue Media again when the restore is done.
Shutdown, remove the Rescue media and external drive, then attempt to boot the Dell from the restored SSD drive. If this is the first boot of the computer then you will be taken through the Dell initial configuration options and personalisation.
Note: If the default Rescue Media does not boot on the Dell computer, this may be because it is using a Linux OS for the boot and may need Secure Boot in the UEFI BIOS settings to be disabled. Otherwise, you will need to create the alternative Windows PE version of the Rescue Media - this has to be done from an installed version of ATI 2017 and will also require that the Windows 10 ADK be installed to provide the WinPE components.

Thank you so very much for the help... I am pleasantly impressed at your extensive response! I made a uefi ati 2017 boot disk and was able to press f12 to tell it to boot from the uefi cd drive. Acronis 64bit loads properly, but it tells me no harddrive detected. There is an optane accelerator on the motherboard, perhaps that is confusing it?

Joseph, I believe that having the optane component on your motherboard will require that you create and use the Windows PE version of the Rescue media, as this requires RAID device drivers. The easiest method to do this is with the MVP Custom ATI PE Builder tool, but you will need to install the Windows ADK components first.
See KB 59184: Acronis True Image 2017: How to create a WinPE-based bootable media then once you have the ADK installed, see the forum topic: MVP Tool - CUSTOM ATI WINPE BUILDER for the latest version of this tool - this can inject the RAID drivers into the PE media automatically for you.

In risposta a Joseph, welcome to these… di truwrikodrorow…

I think I've got myself into a bit of a technical conundrum. Further research suggests that optane doesn't always work well with the evo ssd software and can make acronis backups perhaps less than bullet proof. I think I need to disable and remove optane from my system. It probably doesn't add much to an SSD anyway. However, removing optane might be a bit tricky as well, since I think the HDD is dependent on it. Perhaps I should just load win10 from scratch. I know dell pc's have the os key stored in the bios from previous adventures. hmm..

Thank you VERY much for your help. I've decided to remove the optane and reload the OS from scratch for a fresh start on the new SSD. I will continue to use acronis for my nightly backups once I get the new computer up and running.
Thanks again for the speedy and excellent help!!
