Cant backup to external Hard drive

Thread needs solution

Hi, I've been using Acronis for some years. I need to take a back-up to an external drive for offsite storage. On trying to backup 940GB of data it only backs up the first 30GB then thinks its complete. I've tried two different external drive and it does roughly the same on both. If I back-up to an internal drive it works ok! I'm not sure where to look for this issue any advice would be welcome. I have no error mesages. Thanks Al

Al, please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (get it via the Community Tools link in my signature) and use this to look at what messages are being written to the backup task log.

It would be useful to compare the logs for your backups to the internal and external drives to see what is different.

I haven't come across a similar problem where a backup works fine to an internal drive but not to an external drive.

If you can post screen shots of your backup settings that can be helpful but the logs should be the start place here.

Some other questions, what is the external drive and how is it formatted?  What files are shown on the drive after the task has run?  Can you open the .tib file on the external drive by double-clicking on it in Explorer?

Thanks for this, I'll have to have another go at doing a backup to the external hard drive to answer your questions (I deleted the ones I tried to take).

I'll get back to you asap and thanks for looking at this.

Hi Steve, Looking at the logs it seemed to be saying that it could not find the external HDD.

It also said that the I/o was overloaded..

Anyway, after a format of the drive and trying again it worked fine. unfortunately I have no idea why.

Thanks for your help in sorting this.

Al, glad that your drive looks to be ok after the format, I would guess that you will be keeping an eye on it for some time to come...!
