Cloning system drive (SSD) failed

Thread needs solution

First usage of product not successful. Have W10 installed and tried to clone the system drive (SSD, 256GB).

After restarting the system Acronis comes up with the message 'Starting Acronis Loader ...'.
Some seconds later it changes to a black screen and never comes back. There are no activities
on any drive. Hope someone can help, Hans

Hans-Hermann, welcome to these user forums.

From the brief information you have provided, it sounds as if you are starting the clone action from within Windows 10- this is not recommended as it requires that Acronis modify your Windows boot configuration data in order to create a temporary Linux OS environment from which to launch the Acronis tools needed for the clone.

Please see KB document: 56634: Acronis True Image: Cloning Disks which will guide you through the steps needed in order to clone.  This should be done using the Acronis bootable Rescue Media rather than from windows, and that media needs to be started in the same way that your Windows 10 starts, i.e. if Windows uses UEFI to boot, so should the rescue media too.

See webpage: Check if your PC uses UEFI or BIOS for help in finding the Windows boot mode.
Note: you may need to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS for UEFI systems in order to boot from the Linux media.

Some other guidance:

  • The target drive should be installed in the system in place of the source drive.
  • The source drive should then be connected as a second drive or via a USB adapter.
  • It is recommended that you take a backup of the source drive before attempting anything else, to give you a means or recovery in case of error or corruption of either drive.
  • When the clone has completed, you must disconnect the second drive before attempting to boot from the cloned drive into Windows.  Both drives should now be identical in content and have the same drive signature which can cause problems for Windows if both are active at the same time.  You can reconnect the second drive later after Windows has successfully booted if you want to re-use or format this etc.
