Moving to different locations ... how to use external drive in each place

Thread needs solution

Hi, all ...

I'm using Acronis True Image 2017 on Windows, and have been successful with it. So far, I have been backing up to an external Seagate drive once a week.

I have temporarily moved to a vacation house, and have a new external WD drive there. I cloned my Seagate settings and successfully backed up to the WD drive.

The problem is that when I select the WD drive, I don't see "Recover disks" or "Recover files" buttons at the bottom of the screen. I'll be in this vacation house for the next 6 months, so I'd really like to be backing up properly to the WD drive. What am I doing wrong?

Also, I have selected the option to put Arconis backup on the external drive, but I can use Windows Explorer to see that it doesn't appear to be there. What's going wrong?

Barry, welcome to these public User Forums.

This is a case where some screen shots of what you are seeing would be helpful?

Does your cloned backup task to the WD drive show as being successful when it was run?

Do the logs for the backup task show as successful with no error messages?

You can use the MVP Log Viewer tool (see link below) to look at the logs.

What do you mean by selecting the option to put Acronis backup on the external drive?  What are you expecting to see?

Finally, do the Acronis backup .tib files show correctly on the WD drive?

Hi, Steve --

Thanks very much for replying!

I have added screen shots to show what I mean.

"Recoverable.jpg" shows the Samsung drive (not present) with the Recover buttons at the bottom of the window.

"Not Recoverable.jpg" shows the WD drive (present and working) without those Recover buttons.

Why would the WD drive not show the Recover buttons?

Looking at "J1.jpg" and "j2.jpg", I see the WD drive that is mounted and working. If I open the .tlb file using Windows Explorer, I see the drives and files I expect to see. And a Verification operation succeeds. I think the backup *was* complete and successful.

I don't see the Acronis software I'm expecting to see, and I do show a finished .tlb file. Having checked "Place Acronis True Image on media" (see "backup options.jpg"), I would have thought to see a directory or executable representing Acronis software.

Some odd stuff ...

When I click on the Samsung backup's dropdown menu, I see 7 options, including "Validate". When I click on the WD backup's dropdown menu, I see only 3 options: Rename, Clone settings, and Delete. I created the WD backup by doing "Clone settings" from the Samsung backup, yet it seems like WD is somewhat less of a clone ... doesn't have the options I'd expect. Any idea what's going on with this?

Also, the WD backup doesn't show a "last backup" time, even though it was backed up yesterday. See "backup date.jpg". It seems like yesterday's successful backup didn't register properly??

For the log, I think this may be the one you want .... it shows success, I think:

Barry, thanks for the additional information and screen shots.

There is a further difference between the two external drives which will probably explain why the drop down menu options are different too, that is the top line showing Last backup and Total size which are both empty for the WD drive.

A further question: what file system is being used for the WD drive and is it the same as for the Samsung or not?

If the WD drive is using exFAT then the ATI 2017 User Guide does not list this as being supported.  Support for exFAT was added in one of the later versions of ATI.

If it isn't using exFAT, then try using the option to 'Add existing backup' by clicking on the caret 'v' to the right of the normal + Add backup option, and select the .tib file from the WD drive and see if that makes a difference?

Thanks, Steve ...

I wouldn't have known that ATI 2017 wouldn't support exFAT. You raise good questions.

First, thanks for sticking with me on this problem. Expert help really matters.

I note that WD Elements comes with a link that apparently entitles me to download a version of ATI 2021. While I appreciate the option, in light of your advice, it seems like this may be a proactive move by WD to keep people like me away from older versions like ATI 2017. My concern, then, would be whether this ATI 2021 would preclude access to my Samsung drive when I get home.

Given this and what you've raised, I have some homework to do. Luckily, I have only a tiny investment in this WD Elements media, so I'm free to experiment.

Also, given the season, I have to suspend this thread for a week while I'm on family travel.

I'll be back when I know more ... again ... thanks for your help! ... and Merry Christmas!

Barry, the OEM WD version of ATI 2021 has one key requirement in that it has to be able to find / access a WD drive in order for it to activate and be used, so as long as you meet this requirement then it should work with your Samsung drive.

The full Acronis versions of ATI do not have such limitations but older versions such as 2017 do not have support for newer filesystems such as exFAT that companies like WD tend to default to using for their larger drives.

There is always the option of copying the data from the WD and reformatting it as NTFS to get around the ATI 2017 limitation for exFAT.

Hi, Steve --

I think this is the critical information. If the Samsung will be at home1 and the WD will be at home2, the WD version of ATI doesn't help ... it won't find the WD drive when running at home1.

Based on your help, I conclude I should buy a new version of ATI and be happy.

That's the path I'll take, with great thanks for your help!

Hoping for a Merry Christmas for you ...

Barry, please be aware that Acronis have taken the decision to no longer provide perpetual licenses for their applications and go full bore with subscription only.

If you want to stay with perpetual licensing, then look on such as Amazon for a copy of ATI 2020 or 2021 (or any version later than your 2017).  Be aware that ATI 2021 now bundles Acronis Cyber Protect features which themselves require a subscription to use fully.

Thanks, Steve ... this is very useful information, and will save me a bunch of time and frustration.

From what I can tell, the Acronis Cyber Protect is an overlap with what I've been getting from a different security suite for quite a while. So that leaves me interested just in the subscription for the basic backup. I understand Acronis' reasons for doing this, but it doesn't fit my situation, where I have access to a popular cloud-based backup service that also provides free local backup. It sounds like for this use case, I should use the cloud-based backup service's local backup and not Acronis.

I would still use Acronis on existing other systems (... it's an excellent product...), but it sounds like a suboptimal fit for the system I'm asking about.

Great stuff.

Of course, if that doesn't work out, I'll be back for more Acronis ...

Thanks! ... and have a great week!

Dear Barry,
we're sorry to know this change in the licensing options has disappointed you! I've passed your feedback to the product management for review. Hopefully, we'll be able to provide you with a suitable solution in the future.
