Upgrade SSD
I probably should have asked this fist, but asking after.
I upgraded my 512GB Samsung 950 Pro to a 1TB Samsung 960 Pro
In Win 10, using the latest build of TI 2017 Standard, I did a full one time backup of the SSD to an external USB. Settings were default, but I deleted the following Exclude files
$Recycle.Bin
swapfile.sys
System Volume Information
*.tib
*.tib.metadata
*.tib
*.tib.metadata
*.~
*.tmp
C:\Users\ aaa \ALocal\Temp
C:\Users\ aaa \AppData\Local\Temp
C:\Users\ aaa \AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache
C:\Users\ aaa \AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache
C:\Users\ aaa \AppData\Local\Opera Software
C:\Users\ aaa \AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
C:\Windows\CSC
C:\Users\aaa\Dropbox
and left the following two as Exclude:
hiberfile.sys
pagefile.sys
I did not do a sector by sector backup,
When I rebooted, I had a blue screen and some error message about boot device. I did not write it down. Thinking it was a driver issue, I was able to hit F8 and got to a recover mode and worked my way to boot to safe mode. Safe Mode booted fine. Then I was able to reboot and all seems ok.
Now in the working windows, I noticed my restore points were gone. Is that normal? I thought since I did not exclude System Volume Info it would keep those. I just reenabled system restore on the new drive C and turned it off on the missing drive C.
I did copy my OST files for outlook to another drive. I read that TI does not backup those. I then copied back. Outlook seems fine, but it needs to reindex the search.
Last, I previously had 105GB free, after the restore, I had 185GB free. This is before I extended the volume. Any idea why?
Just want to make sure I have no issues going forward. If need, I can re-backup the old drive and redo it again. Anything else I should look for to check things?
thanks,
Mike

thanks for the reply. However, I had fast startup disabled already so i do not think that was the cause.
Do you know if my backup settings were fine? Should I have used sector by sector? Any issue for not excluding all the defualt itmes?
thanks,
Mike

Sector by sector is not necessary, your settings are fine. I have experienced the locked drive issue myself as have pther MVP's and the workaround to the problem as you described is to boot into safe mode and then restart the machine.
The only way to fully shutdown Windows 8 up is by command prompt shutdown /s command. If you have never done that even though you have disabled Windows Fast Startup you can still have data in a hybrid hibernate state.

thanks. I jusct double checked my power settings and fast startup was turned on. I am on Win 10 Pro. I thoguht I had this turned off. Not sure if it turned back on during an upate or it was just my otehr machines I had it turned off.
Any idea why before I had 104GB free and after the restor I had 180GB free foir the same size partition. This is before I used windows to extend the partition.
thanks again.

Can't say about that but I suppose it might be related to your lost restore points.

thanks. Last year I upgraded an SSD with Win 10, I had the same issue with restore points being gone. Same thing happened now. I do not think I need them but just curious why the restore loses them.

Mike, from doing a quick search on Google there seems to be circumstances where Microsoft VSS will not copy Restore Point data if it deems it to be stale etc.
See webpage: All system restore points constantly deleted with VSS services/volsnap errors that was answered by a Microsoft MVP who wrote:
Restore points are automatically removed when they become dated because their usefulness
would be limited. And in fact using an old one would probably be very detrimental.
Also some antivirus/security and automatic backup programs will remove Restore Points. As
will some Registry Cleaners and System Optimizers (both of those are like Snake-Oil), and
of course some malware.
This might be a case where you would need to change the Snapshot option in ATIH 2017 build 8029 to not use VSS but revert to using the Acronis snapshot method in order to preserve restore point data (System Volume Information).
See KB 59440: Acronis True Image 2017: 'Snapshot for backup' option overview for more information on this new option.

Thanks. I was just curios and agree no real need to have the old restore points.
Been using the new drive and all seems fine. Outside of re-setting up system restore, I do not think there is anything else I need to do.

Mike, glad to hear all is working fine so far, long may it stay that way!
