Cloning does not reboot

Thread needs solution

When trying to clone my hard drive to a same size USB hard drive the process goes to where I must restart.  I click OK and the computer Logs Off, but never restarts. I do see three lines that show momentarily, but am not able to read the info, and then I'm left with a blank screen.  I have no idea how to solve the problem, and am hoping someone is able to guide me in solving the problem.

Thanks a mil,  Uncle Dewey

Dewey, please can you confirm what version / build of Acronis True Image you are using here?

ATI 2018 allows for a live clone of the source drive by using the Microsoft VSS snapshot service (as used when making a backup image) but the target drive should not already contain a Windows OS else a restart will be required.

One of the safest methods of cloning is to use the Acronis bootable Rescue Media to start your computer, and for this to be booted in the same mode as used by Windows.  You can run the msinfo32 program to check the Windows BIOS mode which will show either Legacy or UEFI, then boot the rescue media in the same mode.

Hi Steve,

I have a 2018 version of ATI with a build #10640 which was downloaded as an update on 03/16.

Thanks much,  Uncle Dewey

Dewey, thank you for confirming the version of ATI.

I would recommend a couple of options here:

First, ensure that the target USB drive for the clone is empty / or cleared then attempt the clone again using the Windows ATI application (which should not require a reboot to work).

Note: you can clear the USB drive using the following commands issued in an Administrator level command prompt window.

diskpart
list disk   (to identify the USB drive, i.e. 1)
select disk 1
clean

Please ensure you select the correct drive when using the above!  I would also recommend always having a Full Disk & Partitions backup of the source drive before doing any clone action.

Secondly, check your BIOS boot settings to ensure that you are Not configured to try to boot from a USB drive ahead of your internal HDD, as it is possible that you could be trying to reboot from the target USB drive you are wanting to clone to.

Hi Steve,

I'll try what you suggest--it may be a day or more as my personal life is getting in the way.  I think I have to press F-1 or is it F-5 as the PC is booting so I can see the BIOS--I don't do this stuff enough to remember.

Hi Steve,

The external hard drive that is connected to USB through an adapter no longer shows as a USB Hard drive.  I was cloning to the external drive, but got an error, tried again and got an error, and then the external drive disappeared from Windows and ATI.

When using the command prompt as you suggested earlier the external drive shows and I "cleaned" it, but it still does not show in Windows or ATI.   So the external drive is not there for Windows/ATI, but is there at the "Command Prompt".  I am at a loss as to what to do.

Dewey, if you can see the external drive via the command prompt, then you can try using the Add New Disk Wizard available in the All Tools panel.

Hi Steve,

All is well.  I have completed cloning my internal hard drive and swapped the new external hard drive with the internal hard drive.

Thanks ever so mush as without you I would have been lost.  Uncle Dewey

Dewey, glad to hear all is done and successful, thanks for giving feedback.
