Cloning Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro with 6 visible and 1 hidden partitions totaling 7

Thread needs solution

I really  want a trouble free upgrade from  a 128 ssd to 500 ssd as this is a Christmas present upgrade for my wife. Her C: drive is down to 8%. I have learned each of the 7 partitions must be in order for the repair novo button  / One Key Recovery to go as planned with no hitches. I would like to think I have with ATI, booting with my rescue USB and cloning outside window will manage all that's needed. Any advice or input? I do keep her backed up weekly.

A clone is a bit for bit carbon copy of one drive to another.  If you plan to use the Rescue Media that is fine.  Be aware that if these drives are both SATA based it is possible to do the clone from within the Windows True Image application, this is new to the 2018 versions.  The only word of caution there is to make sure your target drive (500GB in this case) is a drive void of any previous OS installation.

Whether using the rescue media or the Windows app we MVP's recommend creating a full disk backup of the source drive prior to cloning as a safety measure in the unlikely event things go wrong.

Enchantech, Thanks for your prompt reply. Yes both are mSata. The bit about being able to clone being possible  from within the Windows True Image application is news to me. I still worry about that hidden #7 partition. Seeing you have Lenovo laptops with ssd accounts for something.

I come to my wife's rescue when she has issues and with her C: drive at a critically low volume it time to do something about that.

I was wondering would the "Unallocated” space automatically be filled or would I need to extend the C: partition into that space?

Tsquare, when you create a Disk & Partitions backup for the Yoga 2 computer, if you click on the Source panel and select the SSD drive, at the bottom of the panel you will see the text "Full partition list" which is a toggle switch meaning that you are currently looking at the "Short partition list".  Clicking on this option will show you any hidden / system partitions that would need to be included in the backup.

As Enchantech recommended earlier, please do make a full backup of the source SSD drive before you attempt to do a clone to a new drive.

Both Backup & Restore and Cloning methods of migrating to your new larger SSD drive should handle any change in disk size automatically, resizing the partitions to fit the new space available.

To do the Clone with ATI 2018 running in Windows, you would need to be able to attach the new SSD either via a second mSATA connector or via a USB adapter, and the new drive should not have any data on it (as it will be wiped as part of the clone anyway).  You should not attempt to boot into Windows with both drives attached once you have done the clone as this can cause one or both of the drives to be corrupted due to having duplicate disk signatures.

Thanks Steve Smith,

1. Will do a full backup of the source msata SSD drive first.

2."Clicking on this option will show you any hidden / system partitions that would need to be included in the backup."

Just what I needed to know.

3. I have the USB msata Enclosure and the Picquic Teeny Turner ready.

4. Her 500g msata is a Samsung new and still in the unopened box.

I am doing this as a Christmas Present.

I do know Samsung has their Disk Magician but you MVP's are so good helping a guy through issues that might come up. I am not changing horses in the middle of a good ride. I started with ATI Home in 2010 I think. You haven't  let me down yet.

Sounds to me like you have a solid plan.  Let us know how it goes.

Guys,

Look I finally cloned old msata in Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro to new larger Msata and the operating system failed to boot.

Now what?

OK, given that 7 months has gone by since our last conversation, please can you clarify exactly what steps you have followed here when you cloned the old msata drive to the new one?

Some quick questions:

Are you still able to boot from the old msata drive if you reinstall it in the Yoga?

What version of Windows OS is involved here?

What does Windows show as the BIOS mode when you run msinfo32 (assuming you can boot to the Windows desktop)?

Yes 7 months is a long time.

I put old mSata back in and all is as it was.

Message after clone was Windows Boot Manager Boot Fail.

And I thank you for the promp reply.

I did a Clone. ATI initialized the new mSata and I failed it saw 6 partitions.

Now what?

Look I am a bit rattled.

The clone was successful.

After I removed the old and installed the new Windows Boot Manager Boot Fail was the message after the Lenovo Splash screen.

Thanks for confirming you have Windows 10.

Please run the command msinfo32 from Windows 10 then check what is shown for BIOS mode in the report this command produces - this should either show UEFI or Legacy

See KB 59877: Acronis True Image 2017: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media as this shows how you should be booting the Acronis Rescue Media in order to perform the clone from the old Msata drive to the new one.

If you do not boot the Acronis Rescue Media in the same BIOS mode as used by Windows 10, then Acronis may convert the cloned drive to an incorrect partition format which wouldn't then boot.

Tom, you need to ensure that you are booting from the Acronis Rescue media in UEFI mode when doing the clone so that the target drive is not converted from GPT to MBR during the process.

Thats fine

But after making a New rescue media thumb drive i never saw those screen but for the last. I seem to be in a wpeinit folder.  You show me one thing with the  link and I see another.

Nothing is so cut and dry.

Tom, thanks for confirming that your BIOS mode is UEFI - not sure why you needed to create new rescue media if you had this from your earlier attempt at cloning?

Did you try following the steps 6. and 7. in the KB document to check whether the rescue media had booted in UEFI mode or not?

6. Click on the black window that is behind Acronis True Image, type regedit and press Enter on the keyboard

7. Browse to the section HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control and look at the value of the "PEFirmwareType" parameter

"1" means Legacy BIOS/CSM boot mode - "2" means UEFI boot mode

Steve

At step 7 I had a 2 UEFI

Should I clone once more with rescue media or let SAMSUNG Data Migration do it thing on the C: drive and be done.

Tom

Tom, if you are seeing 2 for UEFI when in the Rescue Media, then you should be able to do the clone from there.

One thought dug from my memory, we have seen issues when Samsung Magician has been active on the source drive when cloning. If you have this application active, try turning it off / disabling it from Windows before attempting the clone.

If you want to give Samsung Migration a go, then make sure you have a good backup of the source drive, which hopefully you already do have, and give it a try.

Steve

1. Samsung Data Migration was not setup but still in it's zip file.

2. I kept thinking I have been here before and checked my notes and gave up on A TIH Clone once before on a Dell Inspiron 15 7000. Here I went to Samsung Disk Migration and all is well. I just lost the rescue partition.

3. I used Samsung Data Migration Windows 10 booted as before just double the space.I the backed up and verified.

So long to all those Lenovo Partitions I found no explanation for and the Windows 8 partition although I have a USB Windows 8 Recovery with it I made when it was new.

4. Mission accomplished Google Drive (Pictures synced from wife's and my phones) that kept taking up more and more space has plenty of room.

Acronis true Image Home is a brilliant piece of software. I have been backing up every Saturday with it since True Image 10.0 this clone of SSD inside of Windows.

5. Disk & Partitions backup for the Yoga 2 computer, if you click on the Source panel and select the SSD drive for destination must be the way to go, not clone. "at the bottom of the panel you will see the text "Full partition list" which is a toggle switch" must have been there.

6. We would never go back to Windows 8 so what if I lost a push button access to instant restore. I backup 3 PC every week and restore works like a champ.

Just the same thanks you for your time, patience and effort.

Tom

Tom, the bottom line will always be that the job gets done and everything works as expected, so glad to hear that the move to the larger SSD has been successful!

Steve,

Yes so true.

I just saw a Video about Cloning How to clone your disk with acronis true image. The destination SSD in the laptop needed to be in the PC and the source in the USB enclosure. Here How to Clone your disk with Acronis True Image 2017

Oh well.

Tom

Tom, the video shows the 'recommended' method when cloning but other methods can also work provided care is taken..
