Confused on how to use UNIVERSAL RESTORE

Thread needs solution

I've read the doc but for some reason I'm still confused on how to use Universal Restore:

I have:

Laptop #1 (original source):  I have full backup using ATI 2018 backed up on an external drive.

Laptop #2 (destination): "ALMOST" identical to laptop #1 but "new from the factory replacement" with very slight hardware differences

Both running WIN10 Pro

I want to put the full backup of #1  on replacement laptop #2

I have a bootable Acronis recovery USB (tested and boots) and a bootable Acronis Universal Restore USB (tested and boots).

What exactly do I need to do?  Do I first restore the "dissimilar image" to the new laptop then run Universal restore on the new laptop? Sorry, it just can't figure out the steps despite reading the docs.

Thanks!

EdF, with having two Windows 10 Pro laptops with very similar hardware, then the process you need to follow should be a lot easier that it could be otherwise.

As a precaution against errors, I would recommend having a full backup of both laptops before starting this process - this would give you the ability to go back to square one if needed.

The first step to perform would be to boot your laptop #2 from your Acronis USB Rescue Media with your external backup drive also connected.

Verify that you can identify the correct target drive you will be recovering your backup (from laptop #1) to, then do a Disk level recovery.

See forum topic: [How to] recover an entire disk backup for a guide on this process.

Assuming that the recovery is reported as successful, shutdown the laptop, disconnect the external drive and the USB rescue media.

Try booting directly into Windows 10 Pro without using the Acronis Universal Restore media.  Windows 10 is much better at recognising new or changed hardware and dealing with it during the boot process.

If there are issues that Windows cannot deal with, i.e. BSOD events / crashes, then shutdown again and boot from the AUR media then select the restored Windows 10 OS and apply AUR to this to do any further preparation needed.  This will also report if any additional device drivers are needed for this process.

Note: One key point with using the Rescue media is that this needs to be booted using the same BIOS mode as used by Windows - run the msinfo32 program to check what this is - this will show the BIOS mode as either UEFI or Legacy.  The Rescue Media is capable of booting in either of these modes.

See KB 59877: Acronis True Image 2017: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media for examples of the panels shown during the boot process.
