How to delete a specific few increments in Acronis True Image 2018?

Thread needs solution

I have chosen the incremental method of backups for my laptop. But now, my disk is full from all the increments. How do I delete a few increments? I have now set the "Store no more than .. recent version chains" option to 5 but my old backup chains still remain. There are around 12 increments in it. How do I get rid of only specific increments to free up space in my disk?

You can't cleanup just incrementals in a single chain.  If you have multiple backup chains, you can use the "cleunup versions" option (click the right of the backup name dropdown).  Then you can manually delete entire chains.

But, if you have just have one backup with a bunch of incrementals, you're out of luck.  Your only option is to move the backup elsewhere, or delete it and start again.  You can still delete the entire backup with the "cleanup vesions" option, but be aware that you will lose that backup and restore options from it, so take a new backup with the new settings ASAP.

Last, be aware that 5 recent version chains, means you need room for 6 full backups.  The cleanup will only happen after the 6th full backup has run.

Rachana,

First, incremental backup files are dependent on each other in order to achieve a successful restore.  If you delete individual incremental backup files you must do so in reverse order of how they were created.  In other words delete latest incremental file first followed by the next most recent and so on.  If you choose incremental files from the earliest or first created followed by next then the next and so on, what will happen is that the backup will not be complete so a recovery will not be possible.

Beyond that you MUST use the True Image GUI to delete any files created by the application so that the applications database will reconcile itself to adjust for any files deleted.  If you use another method such as Explorer to delete files the backup database will become corrupted and cause further issues and errors within the application.

I believe the Cleanup Versions option is new to ATI 2019, so if you're still running ATI 2018 you won't have that option.

I've been able to remove them by turning off Active Protection and just deleting the files in Windows Explorer, but you need to remove the full and all associated incrementals for the chain. Then, when you start the True Image UI, it will try to find the old stuff and give an error message for each missing file. Just answer with Ignore and when it's done the internal database should be OK.

Be careful when deleting that you don't get one of the newer files, or delete an incremental within a chain you want to keep. Maybe just try it with the oldest chain to see how it works.

Yes, Acronis True Image 2019 for Windows introduces a new option that offers more control over local backups - "Clean up versions". This feature permits deleting just the selected backup versions and their dependencies on demand, without changing automatic cleanup rules and waiting until they are applied. https://kb.acronis.com/content/61844
