Incremental Backup: Full Backup performed instead of increment

Thread needs solution

Hello Forum,

my setup of my backup is as following:

- Backup method: Incremental

- Create full version after 4 incremental versions

The Backup is performed every week with target Synology NAS.

Last week i performed a full backup (xxx_full_b1_s1_v1.tib). This week the scheduler started the next backup, but again a full version (xxx_full_b2_s1_v1.tib), instead of a incremental version as i would have expected.

I have to admit i aborted the backup during validation by accident (shut down pc) - which leads to fail of the backup execution task. After restart of PC another incremental version (xxx__inc_b2_s2_v1.tib) has been successfully created and validated.

Question: Why a full backup has been performed instead of an incremental backup?

Thank you for your support!

Christian, welcome to these User Forums.

It is difficult to give a precise answer as to why your backup task created a new full backup file when an incremental backup was expected, as there are several reasons why this can happen.

I would recommend downloading the MVP Log Viewer tool and using this to check the detailed backup task log file for the problem task, this may give more informational messages to show what has happened here.  The Log Viewer is available from the Community Tools link below.

Common reasons for this type of problem are the target file not being found on the destination drive, and changes being made to the backup scheme configuration settings, or errors encountered.

Hello Steve, thank you for your quick response.

I've downloaded the tool, quite helpful.

In the meantime i realized another backup-task also created a full backup instead an incremental. I possibly know the root cause now.

For both tasks, wich are planned as incremental backup i initiated the initial back-up manually (after set-up the plan, i activated the button <Backup now> or similar, i am not at my workstation at the moment). So the second performance of the backup was the first time started by the defined time schedule.

Could this be the reason?

Thank you in advance.

Christian, running your backup manually before doing the same by schedule should not give this behaviour, so the best way to try to understand what is happening is by looking at the backup task log details.

If you can post the log file for where it should have created an incremental backup but instead made a full one, then that should help.

Ok, here is the log. As i already said: During validation i cancelled by mistake.

Christian, thanks for the log information.

Add full version to file: Backup Images-Lightroom_full_b2_s1_v1.tib

Seeing the above would suggest to me that you have not configured the backup task to create Incremental backups here - can you post a screen shot of the Backup Scheme panel.

I would expect to see something similar to my screen image before.

Christian, thank you again.  Your settings look correct for the incremental scheme so a mystery as to why an incremental was not created given no error message to suggest a full backup file was not present.

What happens if you run this same backup manually, do you get the incremental then?
