New task is deleting unrelated tib files from other tasks.

Thread needs solution

I recently created a new backup task to include the Documents folder (on D Drive) and the Pictures and Videos folders (both on Drive I).

Inexplicably, upon completion the task is deleting unrelated tib files for other backup tasks.  I have stopped this unruly scheduled task and will create a new one and observe it very closely!

This is very scary! I have never had it happen before.

Has anyone observed this behaviour?

Thanks.

BR, what does the backup task log file show when this behaviour is happening?  I would only expect this type of thing to happen if all the tasks involved share the same name.

Hi Steve

The problem occurs when it gets to the consolidation phase.

I had a big shock when I realised what it was doing.

Having completed a full backup of the task "Docs - Pics - Vids (D+I)" it then deleted my weekly email backup from an entirely separate task, as well as the incremental backups of the current task. It then went on to delete my Windows 10 backup, again from an entirely separate task!

Below are snips from the logs.

Thanks for your time.

In a previous scheduled run of the same task it deleted my Programs Folder backup as well as the weekly email backup and my Windows 10 drive backup!

Consolidation = Automatic cleanup and this is definitely not correct behaviour to be deleting backups for unrelated tasks.

Please open a Support Case with Acronis for this and submit a System Report that will capture all the log files plus a copy of the database etc for them to investigate.

You may want to turn off automatic cleanup for the time being and manage your files manually until this is resolved.  The alternative here would be to create new backup tasks but you will probably need to clean up the database first.

To clean up the database, first stop all ATI Services then any active Processes.  Next, either rename or delete the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database folder, i.e. rename to Database.old.

A new Database folder and files will be created when you relaunch the main ATI app plus the Services will be restarted automatically.  You will lose your current task history doing this.

Thanks Steve.

I have deleted the errant task and created a new one from scratch.

So far so good - no signs of unexpected deletions.

I'll monitor it closely and if it recurs will do as you suggested.

Thanks for your help.

Just an FYI to know you're not the only one to experience this bizarre behaviour !  It is happening to me at the moment, 1 task deleting backups from other tasks.

A quick look at the post gives me the impression that all the backups are made to the same folder. Thus I would not have seen this behaviour as I have separate sub-folders for each backup task.

Are you using the recently issued build of ATI 2018; if not, hopefully it is fixed in that build. Do not recall any reports of similar behaviour with ATI 2019.

Ian

In my case, I am using  ATI 2018 Home, build 15470 (latest build at this time).  This happened immediately after updating to build 15470, a few days ago.  The backup targets AND sources were all different, and, all on different target devices (HDD, USB drive, NAS).  The only common denominator is that long ago, task 'b' was cloned from task 'a', but then completely modified before running.  Was running cleanly before build 15470.  Very unusual, and disturbing - no errors or warnings in the logs, just a clear reference to the wrong historical TIB file being 'cleaned' / deleted.

Normally I would recommend to open a Support ticket for such issues but not sure that that is still available for ATI 2018 users now that 2019 has been available for many months, so can only recommend using the Feedback tool to make this issue known to Acronis directly.

As Ian has already mentioned, best practice is to always try to use separate destination locations for all different backup sources, plus to keep all backup task names unique.  The most likely cause of this particular issue is that there are references in the Acronis Database to 'old tasks' using the same name but stored in other locations, and ATI is 'cleaning up' the files for those old tasks.  This should not be happening and there are no tools provided to examine or manually cleanup the Acronis Database information, which is a weakness in the design here!

If you have the installer for the prior build I would suggest going back to that version as the problem apparently was "introduced' in the latest build. (I try to keep a copy of the full installation file for each build of ATI in case I need to revert to an earlier build.)

Alternatively, create separate subfolders for each backup task and from within Acronis move the backup files to the appropriate directory. Hopefully that will solve the problem.
