Not removing older backups disk full

Thread needs solution

Im running 2018. I have not done anything at all to the software or settings in over a year. It's set to do a full backup weekly and incremental backups daily in between. It's set to automatically remove old backups so my storage device never fills up. My storage device is a Toshiba Canvio Hard drive connected to the Dell desktop with USB and configured in Windows 10 as drive D.

Up till Jan 13 2020 this has worked seamlessly. But since that date, with NO action on my part whatsoever to change software, update, or modify settings, it no longer removes any older backups at all and the last 2+ weeks it has failed to do any backup at all.

Please explain why the software would stop working the way it's configured, with no action at all on my part to change anything.

Moreover, please tell me how to remove old backups to free up space on the Toshiba so I can resume normal backups.

When I try removing files from the Toshiba manually, in Windows Explorer, for example, I get a message from Acronis saying something to the effect I need permission. Even when I'm signed on as administrator in Windows AND when I right click the Acronis icon on my desktop and choose "run as administrator" I cannot manually delete old backups.

Pls help.

Tom, there was a known problem back in late October / November 2019 that caused backup settings to be reset to the default values used by Acronis for new backup tasks, with no automatic cleanup set.  This was caused by the Acronis online Dashboard servers which had a bad server update which has since been resolved.

If you have been affected by the above issue, then this could be why your backup disk has become full!  You should check your backup task settings to ensure that they are set as you intended for them, including that automatic cleanup is enabled etc.

The reason why you have not been able to delete unwanted backups is down to Acronis Active Protection being enabled.  This is intended to prevent malware from attacking the files but also prevents them from being deleted by the user too.

You can turn off AAP by using the option in the ATI GUI to do so, then you will be able to delete files to make space on your backup drive.

Note: deleting files manually may cause some errors for missing files when your backup runs so it is normally recommended to do a validation for the task after doing this.  When any missing file error is presented, take the ignore option.
