Permissions on restored files

Thread needs solution

I recently wiped my hard drive on my pc, did a clean reinstall of windows 10, and now I am attempting to restore my data from my acronis 2018 backups.  The restoration seems to work fine, but I'm finding that I don't have permission to access some of the files, even logged in as administrator.  I'm unable to change the ownership of the files, unable to read them, or even delete them.  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul, when doing a recovery of files and folders, there are normally options provided that ask if you want to restore with their original permissions or not?

If you have done a clean install of Windows, then you should never restore using the original permissions as the user account holding these permissions will not be found, this is regardless of whether you have created a new user account with an identical name!

See the ATIH 2018 User Guide:

File recovery options

Location: Recovery options > Advanced > File recovery options

You can select the following file recovery options:

  • Recover files with their original security settings - if the file security settings were preserved during backup (see File-level security settings for backup), you can choose whether to recover them or let the files inherit the security settings of the folder where they will be recovered to. This option is effective only when recovering files from file/folder backups.

Paul, thanks for the feedback, glad the tip worked for you.
