Recovery asks for backup that no longer exists

Thread needs solution

Hello,  I am using True Image 2018,  Build 12510.  I backup 2 partitions to an external USB drive.  The name of the machine is Defiant.  I configured the system to backup to \\DEFIANT\Backup3\Defiant and had this working for some time but then ran out of space on the external drive.  I attached a new usb drive and mounted it at \\DEFIANT\Backup2. I then deleted all existing backups within Acronis and started over with a new backup called Defiant 2 that references \\DEFIANT\Backup2\Defiant   The backup works fine.  The issue is when I select the Recovery tab it asks for \\defiant\Backup3 -- this drive is not attached and no longer exists.  I cannot seem to get any further in the recovery process.  There is no emergency (yet),  I am just trying to confirm that I will be able to actually recover my files if needed.

Why is this reference to my old backup location still there?  How do I move forward?

Thank you.

Jim, welcome to these User Forums.

Part of the issue here is that you are testing recovery using the Windows ATI application, which in turn refers to the Windows Registry information held, and also to an internal Acronis Database holding information about backup tasks and files etc.

Somewhere in the information referenced there is still data related to the \\defiant\Backup3 location and files that were stored there.

Please see the following KB document that should help you:

KB 58004: Acronis True Image 2016: Troubleshooting Issues Related to NAS Credentials - this will show you where to look in the registry for stored credentials to the old location.

When or If you need to perform a recovery of your OS drive from the NAS, then this should only be performed when booting from the Acronis Rescue Media and using a cabled network connection to the NAS drive.  This method does not reference either the Windows Registry or Acronis Database information, as would be the case with a bare-metal recovery scenario.

It is highly recommended that you should both create and test the Acronis Rescue Media a long time before it might be needed for any recovery action.

Thank you very much for responding.

1) My original post was confusing because I am using smb paths to access the usb backup drives.  Actually the computer being backed up is Defiant and the drives are directly attached - no NAS. Just wanted to clear that up.

2) I did search the registry and found that there was a connection section making reference to Backup3.  The issue is that the software is trying to read files from Backup3 period - it should only be concerned with Backup2.  In the UI I deleted ALL backups and started over with Backup2 - but it appears the software retained some memory of the previous backups.

3) How do I reset this software and start fresh?  I am tempted to delete and re-install but I am not sure the uninstall will clear out all the old data.   I see that the registry still has entries for Acronis 2014 - which I have not used for a long time.

4) Is there any way to see the contents of this internal database?  I have been developing software for 30 years so I may be able to browse around and get some understanding (or not)

5) I want to be able to click on the Recovery tab and confirm that I can browse the backup to make sure it will be possible to recover an individual file.  Are you saying that browsing the backup and possibly recovering a single file using the UI does not work?

Jim, thanks for your clarification.

How do I reset this software and start fresh?  I am tempted to delete and re-install but I am not sure the uninstall will clear out all the old data.   I see that the registry still has entries for Acronis 2014 - which I have not used for a long time.

The best way to reset the software and make a clean, fresh start, is by uninstalling ATI and then using the Acronis Cleanup Tool (link in my signature) which will clean out all the remaining files, folders and registry entries.  Restart the computer to complete the cleanup action, then make a clean install of ATI using the latest version full installer program.
Note: doing the above will remove all your backup tasks and configuration etc, so you will need to create new tasks and set the configuration again.

Is there any way to see the contents of this internal database?  I have been developing software for 30 years so I may be able to browse around and get some understanding (or not)

The internal database is using SQLite so can be browsed using any tools available for this database type, i.e. DB Browser for SQLite

The database is located at C:\Program Data\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database

I want to be able to click on the Recovery tab and confirm that I can browse the backup to make sure it will be possible to recover an individual file.  Are you saying that browsing the backup and possibly recovering a single file using the UI does not work?

One part of the ATI install process is to integrate archive methods into the Windows Shell so that you can open and explore backup image files using File Explorer.  This way you can either double-click or right-click on any Acronis .TIB file in Explorer.  Double-click will open the archive and allow you to browse the contents, including using Copy & Paste functions.  Right-click will provide a menu with Acronis True Image shown, where you can Mount (Disk images only) or Validate any .TIB archives.

The same can be done via the ATI GUI using the Recovery options provided but tends to require many more mouse clicks etc.

Jim,

I have been experiencing the same issue, where True Image is somehow holding onto previous paths that are no longer valid, requiring me to authenticate against them to both validate and and recover my current, valid archives. Since these paths are no longer valid, I am unable to authenticate, and therefore unable to do anything with my current backups.

Taking Steve's advice, I opened up the C:\ProgramData\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Database\Archives.db file, and blindly (after backing up first, as I dont have a full understanding of the schema) removed all rows in the Volume_ table that had url_ values containing invalid paths. After restarting True Image, I was then able to perform validation and recovery operations on my new backup.

Hope this helps!
Chris.

Chris, thanks for sharing your update and findings here.  Please use the Feedback tool in the ATI GUI to pass your comments about archive paths in the database directly to Acronis.
