Repair Windows 7

My OS seems to be corrupted and I would like to repair it.  I am thinking about doing a clean install of the OS and I'm not sure about the procedures.

I have a backup of my c: drive with the OS and I'm not sure about the procedures to load my current software on top of the clean install of the OS.

I think that the procedure is to use Acronis Universal Recovery, but I'm not sure.

I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction.  Thanks, in advance.

Bruce, if you have an Acronis True Image backup of your Windows 7 OS drive C:, then there should be no need for you to do a clean install of Windows then reinstall your applications etc.

Sign in to your Acronis account at the main Acronis.com website, then download the .ISO file for the Acronis Rescue media, unless you have already got a copy of this which you have created.  The .ISO file can be used to burn a bootable CD or DVD, or else you can use a utility program such as Rufus or ISOtoUSB to burn the ISO data to a small USB stick (less than 32GB FAT32 format).

You should then be able to boot your Windows 7 PC from the Acronis Rescue Media, with your backup drive connected, and recover your computer from the backup of your drive C:  This will bring back the computer to how it was at the time when the backup was created, i.e. the OS and all applications and user settings etc.  Any changes made after the backup date will be lost, so you may want to make another backup of the Windows 7 PC in its current state to allow you to recover any new documents, photos etc later.

You do not need the Acronis Universal Restore media for recovering your backup to the same PC - that is only needed when migrating to new hardware (computer, motherboard, CPU etc).

Note: the Acronis Rescue Media can be used to both make backups and to recover the system, but please ensure that you do not overwrite your Drive C: backup when making a new one - ideally put backups in different folders and use unique file names to avoid any errors.

See forum topic: [How to] recover an entire disk backup for a guide for doing the recovery.

Thanks Steve:

I have backups, of my OS drive but I think that my backups include corrupted files and drivers.  I was thinking that a clean install would help me correct some of them.

I've never used ATI Universal Restore before but I thought I had seen a guide where it was used to help clean up a corrupted OS drive. I thought that the process was to do a clean install and use the drive backup to reload the programs using ATI Universal Restore. But, I could be mistaken.

I've recovered using my ATI backup, but my OS is unstable (I keep getting BSOD frequently).  That's why I'm considering a clean install process.

I would also like to use a clean install to make a new Windows 7 Repair Disk, since my current disk doesn't seem to work.

Cheers,

Bruce

Assuming you have a Windows 7 install disk you can perform a Repair install or In Place Upgrade as it is called to clear up most BSOD problems.  Look HERE

If you do not have an install disk then head over to the Digital River site and download their Microsoft Windows and Office ISO download tool HERE

Next use the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool to burn the ISO file to a USB flash drive to use for the repair. Look HERE
