Restoring image to new computer using uefi boot..Destination Greyed out

Thread needs solution

Good Day,

I have been using True Image since the days of Ultimate Boot CD for Windows to load images.  I have never had a problem, might have been slow, but never had an issue.

I created a UEFI boot USB using my windows 10 computer and ADK.  I figured this could replace my aging UBCD4Win USB and I could use this going forward.

I created an iso using the following options:

Media Builder

Advanced

windows 8, windows 8.1, windows 10

skipped drivers

iso

created it an loaded it to rufus.

I was able to boot with no issues, browse to the network and find the image I wanted to restore.

I selected the following options as I always have:

recover whole disks and partitions

select all of Disk 1

but when I get to destination of Disk 1 the hard drive is greyed out...I tried both blank and filled hard drives with no success.

What am I missing?  Why would it be greyed out?

thanks in advance for your help.

Some comments first:

There is no need to use Rufus or any other third part utility to create a bootable USB drive, you can do this from within the Acronis Media Builder Tool by just having the USB stick connected before starting the process.

You can also use the MVP Custom ATIPE Builder script as you have the Windows ADK already installed, where this will allow you to create a more flexible Recovery (and Backup) tool that includes a Web browser, File Manager etc.

All current ATI Rescue Media will work with both Legacy BIOS/MBR and UEFI boot systems.

With regards to the destination drive being greyed out, this can be for different reasons, so impossible to second guess what your reason was without more information?

What is the size of the image you are trying to restore, is this a backup of a single disk drive or of multiple disk drives, what type disk was the backup taken from?

What is the size of the destination/target drive, how is this connected?

Have you checked the Log files for this activity in the Rescue Media ATI panel, does this show any error messages?

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply.  To answer your questions

I just used rufus because i created an iso, I saw that I could write directly to the USB drive..but that isn't the problem it boots perfectly

For this case i created an image using an older version of true image (I have 2018 now) and saved it to a network location.  The computer I created the image from died.  I just purchased a new computer.  I used the exact same Hard Drive, make, model, size, etc. and it greyed out.  I then tried hard drives with higher and lower capacities to no avail.

The HD is connected to sata inside the computer.  I boot from USB and try to restore that way.

No errors because i can't get past the greyed out hard drive.

Maybe because it is a different computer I have to use Universal Restore?

No problem about using Rufus, that was just an aside.  I used it earlier today for something else.

What was the earlier version of ATI that was used to create the backup image?

Do you remember how the image was created, i.e. if sector-by-sector mode was used?  If it was, then the target drive needs to be at least the same size or larger than the original to allow for a sector-by-sector mode recovery.

How is the target drive formatted?

If you are using a raw drive, then have you tried Adding it as a new drive first?

If you have a second computer with ATI 2018, have you tried connecting the new drive to that via USB (SATA adapter or docking station) and trying the restore from the Windows ATI GUI?

Universal Restore is not used to perform the actual Restore/Recovery of a backup image to different hardware, that has to be done using the main True Image application (via bootable media or the Windows app), then AUR is used to prepare the restored OS to work with the new hardware found in the different computer.

Ok I just created a linux based windows type USB using the universal restore tool.  Just added the true image part...It seems to be working now.

I guess i am still new to this and if there is a better way let me know.

The earlier version i used was old.  It was whatever worked with Ultimate Boot CD for Windows.

I always do sector by sector backup and restore the same way.

I actually tried to restore using the image downloaded to the ATI USB and that didn't work either....right now the only thing that works is linux based windows ATI.  really strange...

This may be a driver type issue with the hardware involved, where perhaps the Linux media has better drivers?
