*.tib - file contains no content after successful backup

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I'm using Windows 7 Professional with Acronis True Image 2018.

I have created two backup tasks. The 1st task backed up the system drive (C:), the other is for a USB stick.

As backup source I have defined for the 1st task all partitions show ("drives and volumes as backup source": EFI-System-Volume, Lokales Laufwerk (C:). Now I can open the related *.tib file within the Windows Explorer and both volumes are shown, and I can accessing the directories and files from C:

Now my Problem: My second backup task is for a USB stick ("drives and volumes as backup source"). But opening the related *.tib file within Windows Explorer the drive (letter) is shown, but no content. Please, see attachment.

Notes:

1. I have the same result using the "Recovery" tab of the related backup task.

2. I have checked another USB stick - with the same result.

3. In case I'm using as backup source "files and folders" instead of "drives and volumes"  for the USB stick the related *.tib file contains all selected files and directories. But this is not my preffered solution, because modification onto the USB stick (adding/deleting files or directories) requires a redefinition of the directories/files shall be backed up.

4. The size of the *.tib - file created from USB stick matches with the size (used) as shown for the USB stick.

What is wrong here? Hope someone can help me.

Frank, welcome to these public User Forums.

I am not aware of any issues with making any backups of USB sticks and cannot tell from your screen image if there was any data present or not as it shows the lower half of a display for the content (left scroll bar at the bottom).

Please use the MVP Log Viewer tool (link in my signature) to review the backup log for the task that created this backup.

What format is used for the Kingston 32GB USB stick?

Were the USB sticks encrypted with bitlocker or something and not in an unlocked or decrypted state when the backup occurred?  I backup USB sticks all the time without issue (currently using a 128GB sandisk ultra fit as my primary IT swiss army boot tool).  I back it up about once a week and have restored it on several occassions as well. 

If encryption is not the issue, then as Steve mentioned, what is the file system of the drives?  NTFS, FAT32, eXFat, or something else like MacOS Journaled?

Full support for exFAT was introduced in ATI 2019, so if the drive is formatted with exFAT it will not work as expected - see ATI 2018 release notes. With ATI 2019 there is limited exFAT support - see ATI 2019 release notes.

Kingston 32GB USB stick is exFAT formatted - and I did not know that ATI 2018 does not yet support exFAT. NTFS is not an option for me, my tablet cannot read it. And my encrypted container (VeraCrypt) is greater than 2GB...

So, I think I have to upgrade to ATI 2019.

By the way: My Synology NAS (DS918+ with DSM 6.2.1) does also not support exFAT - you have to purchase an extra license for it.

Frank, you could take a 30-day Trial copy of ATI 2019 to test how this would work with your exFAT 32GB USB stick.

Steve, thanks for the tip. Unfortunately  ATI 2019 does't work with my exFAT 32GB USB stick (formatted using Windows 7). I have also tested FAT32 and NTFS formatted USB sticks. Both works as expected.

So for the moment I have to look for another solution...

Frank, sorry that ATI 2019 did not solve this requirement for you when backing up an exFAT USB drive.  I have just tested this for myself and it seems that the statements given in the ATI 2019 User Guide is restricted to working only within the constraints of the ATI GUI, and not for the Windows Shell integration feature of the application.

I was able to backup a 16GB exFAT USB drive (Disk & Partitions) from the ATI 2019 GUI and this is shown in the GUI with the expected size but when I go to the Recovery tab, then this too does not show any file contents , as if the file were empty!

I then performed a disk & partitions recovery from the backup image to the original USB drive and this was successful and all the files & folders on the restored drive were visible in Windows Explorer.
