Update to Win10 1803 - ATI 2018 crashes whole System

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I bought ATI 2018 on 25 May and installed it under Win10 Fall Update.
It worked fine.
Then came the update to 1803 and the drama started. :(
ATI 2018 starts the backup. (file or disk doesn´t matter).
It runs a few minutes, shows the backup-process in the lower part of the main-window.
And then... nothing goes on. The desktop-clock stops, additional progs can´t be started, explorer opens windows very - very - slow. And after clicking around a while, the screen crashes totaly (unreadable mixed-up screen).
When NOT running ATI 2018, each installed browser crahes sooner or later, most times very quickly.
Other programs also crash the whole system.
But if ATI2018 is uninstalled, the whole system works fine again.
Tried new installation of ATI2018 and Nvidia-Drivers (different versions). Same behaviour :(
And no, I don´t use OneDrive ;)
I think there´s a problem on ATI working with the latest Win-Update (April 2018).
Any help?

Thomas, welcome to these User Forums.

I have ATI 2018 working without any issues on multiple computers with Windows 10 build 1803 and also on a Windows 10 Insiders build 17682, so am not seeing any problems as you have described.

I would recommend trying a clean install of ATI 2018 build 11530 if you have only previously done a normal uninstall / reinstall.  Save a copy of your backup task settings using the option provided for this, so that you can import these settings back later.

To do a clean install, uninstall ATI 2018 normally via the Control panel, then download / run the Acronis Cleanup Tool (link in my signature below) using run as administrator, followed by doing a restart to complete the cleanup action.  Finally, download the latest ATI installer from your Acronis account and install this as Administrator.

If you are still seeing issues, then first try creating a completely new backup task (or alternatively, reselect both the Source and Destination for your existing backup tasks).

You may also need to whitelist ATI 2018 with any security applications that you have active on your computer, i.e. antivirus, malware protection, firewall etc.

If none of the above help resolve this issue, then please open a Support Case direct with Acronis and let them work with you to identify why you are seeing this issue and help you resolve it.

Hi Steve,

thank you for the hints.

I´ve run Cleanuptool, made new backup tasks an excluded the whole Acronis Directories from my Antivirus-Software (Nod32 by ESET). Now it works.

But I don´t understand, why the Cleanuptool helped. I never had installed any Acronis-software. So this tool had nothing to cleanup :D

However it seems to work now. Let´s wait, if the scheduled tasks will work too.

Thanks again, Thomas

Thomas, thanks for the update and feedback, glad that you have got ATI working for you.

Steve,

I think it was to early to celebrate...
After a scheduled backup this night the same problems as written in the first post appeared again. :(

I think first I will start looking if windows system is ok. After that I´ll call the Acronis support.

Thomas, it may be worth considering doing an in-place upgrade of your Windows 10 OS in much the same way as is used when Windows does an install of a new Update such as #1803.

I´ve thought about that. But there are so many programs that I have to reinstall - so this will be my last option.

Today i have deactivated VSS of Windows, because as far as I can see ATI has an own routine.

But now (11:18pm) I´m not in the mood to test it.

Maybe this weekend. I´m a little tired of it. Tried different things the last 10 days. It´s enough now.

But I think I´ll need a break with the ATI-installation and hope to get a clear head before starting over ;)

Thomas, doing an in-place upgrade of Windows 10 should not require that any of your applications would need to be reinstalled - I have not had to do this on the multiple times I have used this method.

VSS should also not need to be deactivated but if you are wanting to use the older Acronis snapshot method for your backups, then you need to configure this in the Advanced Options page of your backup task.

See KB 59440: Acronis True Image 2017: 'Snapshot for backup' option overview for details of how to use these configuration options.

Strange. Strange. Strange....

I made the in-place update. Same problems as before.

Seems it is important how I start ATI. If I do this with the desktop icon, I get the errors.
If I use the ATI icon  (running tasks) it works. Sometimes.

The software tells me after finishing that it will shutdown the PC in 30 MINUTES (!) but it closes at it should after 30 seconds.

But the worst thing is, that it does not produce differential backups. I´ve set Acronis Snapshot (because with VSS it crashs).
I made an initial backup and this afternoon let ATI start via scheduler. ATI created a backup with an identical size.
I think I will not ruin my nerves further and kick this peace of so called backup-software where it has to be... :(

Thomas, sorry to read of your continuing problems with ATI 2018 on Windows 10 #1803 - this has not been my own experience with doing the same on multiple different computers, but I suspect there are probably lots of differences, not the least being your Nod32 by ESET  antivirus software which I have never used (and am not trying to blame!).

If you can put up this issue a little longer, then I would recommend opening a Support Case directly with Acronis and letting them work with you to determine a root cause for the issues here.

I would also recommend running the Acronis VSS Doctor tool (link in my signature) to check for why you are seeing any VSS issues here?

Thanks for your hints. But I´m through with it.
Now it runs without crashes. But there´s no excuse that the differential backup of the root backup produces the same size. Even now it has grown up 2 GB. And I have done nothing between the two backups that could cause this.

Maybe there´s a huge bug in the german version (or Donald has sent a twitter :D ). I don´t know.

By the way, I´m 55 and work since 1980 with computers (had a little sharp pocket before someone knew about VC20 ;) )

Maybe I´ll give ATI one last chance and try it once again with the "basic" VSS settings. But I have no big hope that it will suddenly work :(

I´ll report in a few days.

Sorry to read about your problems with ATI2018 since the 1803 update.

FWIW Ive not had any issues with ATI after the 1803 update.

In my experience ATI isnt very tolerant of issues within the Windows installtion itself. Having said that ATI2018 is way more robust and tolerent than previous versions.

Apart from these probems with ATI, how well is your system running post the 1803 update and before it?

Hi BR,
the 1803 now runs perfect. Had a problems with a few apps, because the store didn´t work as ist should.
After reading a few days and changing a few "deep-system-settings" it seems to work now, beside the "Local Experience Pack".

Hi Steve, took awhile to solve the problem. I hope it´s realy solved now.
It was a problem with the NVIDIA-Drivers. After installing an old version (very old version :D ) it never stucks as described earlier.
But at the moment, ATI suddenly disappears while backing up.
Have to find out why. But not today and not tomorrow :D
I´m a little bit tired after working on this problem for the last weeks.
Actually the important things are saved and so I will see what comes ;)
By the way. The removal tool you told me to use ist a little bit dangereous.
It blasted the registry two times.
Thanks god I had a backup of it too ;)
