Booted with ATI recovery media, it tells me that my ext USB containing my tib files must be formatted

Thread needs solution

ATI 2019 (product trial)

I'm just past the middle of my product trial, and decided to do a recovery test.  When I boot up with the recovery media and browse to my backup location - a 4TB USB 3 WD My Book - I get a dialog box that tells me that I must format the drive before using it.  The drive itself appears in the list of available hard drives, I just can't access it...so at least it's being detected.

I've been looking up solutions, but to no avail.  Here's what I've tried so far:

  • Created different versions of the recovery environment.  I've tried the simple method, which appears to be a basic WinPE.  Tried the advanced method, which had me install Windows AIK, thereby letting me create a Win 7 recovery environment.  (Same result as described above.)
  • When those didn't work, I tried the Linux version.  Basically had the same result.  The drive appeared in the list of available drives, but no contents were shown.
  • Finally, I moved my .tib files to a different external drive.  3TB USB 3 Seagate.  Tried all of the above again, exact same results.

So at this point I'm a bit stumped.  Googling hasn't produced much.  I'm wide open to suggestions, and I'm going to try contacting support next to see what they can think up.  I've been very happy with the simplicity of the Acronis UI and backup process; but if I can't do a recovery it's really of no use to me.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has a look at this!

Travis,

Is your Win 7 install on this machine an X86 or 32 bit version?  If so I believe you have encountered a limitation of 32 bit machines not being able to access partitions larger than 2TB.  This limitation is device specific not the reslt of being 32 bit.

What I suspect is that this machines bios cannot read the GPT partition scheme of a partition larger than 2TB.  It is also possible that the storage controller driver does not support greater than 2TB disks.

You can try an updated storage driver and look for a bios update.  These may not be available for your device.

I doubt that the problem is due to ATI 2019 being in trial mode. (The limitations of the trial version are listed here.)

There is no reason why ATI should want to format the drive where the backup files are located. The only reason it may wish to do so it that the USB disk uses an unsupported file system, however that is unlikely as even exFAT is supported by ATI 2019 (see here). [exFAT support is not available for earlier ATI versions.]

You could try attaching the USB disk to a different USB port or try a different USB cable if you have one, although I doubt either will solve the problem you are seeming.

Hopefully someone else will be able to offer you a solution/explanation.

I appreciate the responses.  I run a x64 system.

One thing I haven't tested much so far is whether this is a UEFI vs. BIOS issue.  Running Win 7 obviously I use BIOS.  I noticed that Acronis likes to format the recovery media for UEFI though.  I read (I think in an Acronis KB) that the recovery media is made so that it can be booted either way.  Yet I've found that the WinPE/RE versions will not boot under BIOS.

I may go pick up a cheap usb 2.0 hub and connect my drive(s) through that just in case it's a usb 2/3 thing that I'm facing here.  I don't have any usb 2 ports on my rig.

Travis,

In light of the fact that you are using an X64 system, I would encourage you to contact support with your issue as you may have found a bug in the trial version.

@Enchantech is probably right that this is something that requires the assistance of Acronis tech support. There have been other issues with rescue media creation with the current build of ATI and this may also be the cause of your difficulties.
