Clone disk without restart spotty in 2018, why buy 2019

I purchased 2018 solely for the advertised function of cloning a disk in windows without restarting. This function has worked less then 50% of the time with Acronis 2018 ,on all 3 of my computers. Notifying Acronis about this has resulted in no reply or resolution. I see that cloning without restart is now advertised in 2019. I've purchased every version since 2010, why in the world would I upgrade to 2019, for a function that I should have in version 2018, but do not?  If it truly works in 2019, why wasn't it fixed in 2018?

William,

I ran a test of the clone feature in the Beta of the new 2019 product.  I used an SATA III SSD drive attached to the PC using a USB adapter cable.  This target drive was empty of any data so drive was unallocated in Windows Disk Management.

I opened 2019 Beta on the PC and ran the clone tool selecting the installed OS C:/ drive as the source disk and the USB attached SSD as the destination or target disk.  Ran the clone operation and it completed successfully without need of a reboot of the machine.  A new part of the online clone feature with 2019 is that a clear instruction appears on screen after the clone process telling the user how  to proceed with using the newly cloned drive.

Now where 2018 stumbled was when the user chose a destination or target disk in the clone tool that already contained an install of another Windows OS on it.  In other words the drive contained data.  This would cause the application to require a reboot to perform the operation as you have previously pointed out.  To prove that problem was corrected I did the following:

After the clone process outlined above completed and the aforementioned information screen was displayed, I used Windows Eject feature to disconnect the drive from the PC.  I then unplugged the adapter cable from the PC and then immediately plugged it into a different USB port on the front case of the PC.  I then ran the clone tool again selecting the same source disk as previous and the same destination or target disk as well.  I then ran the clone process and reboot was not requested by the app nor required at any time.  The clone tool ran again to completion as expected.

So I am of the opinion that the problem as it exists in the 201 version has been fixed!  If it works in the Beta product it will work in the released version.

Thank you for the testing and the explanation of why I have problems with 2018 cloning. When it did work for me, I must have been using drives that I cleaned with the DOS diskpart command, which I do occasionally. I just never connected the dots. I’ll upgrade one license to 2019, just to stay in the game. Cloning has been my preferred method of backing up; hard drives are cheap and, up until recently, easy to swap out. If/when I purchase a new laptop I’ll have to go back to full backups anyway; removable hard drives are becoming a thing of the past.
