Enormous time difference between media
My C: drive holds about 160GB of data, when I make an image to my D: SSD drive it takes 12 minutes with a validation. When I choose to make an image to a 256GB USB 3.1 thumb drive it takes over five hours.

"256GB USB 3.1 thumb drive"
Wwat is the maximum write speed of it - that would be under best case and probably not real world as those speeds do not reflect real-world 4K sequential writes, which is the true speed you'd need to compare for write operations.
Thumb drives are super slow for data writes in most cases. An externally connected spinning drive (mechanical 7200RPM drive with a USB to SATA adapter) would likely be several times faster than writing to a flash drive.

Thank you all. I bought the USB 3.1 thumb drive thinking it would be more convenient to take around but in view of the slowness of it I shall revert to my 'Toshiba 2TB USB connection only' to make my images on. I will use the USB 3.1 thumb drive for other data such as photos.

There is a handy little tool from ATTO Technology called the ATTO Disk Benchmark that determines read and write speed of storage devices. I can't vouch for its accuracy, but it's test results are really interesting (and discouraging) when comparing USB flash memory with real drives.
You can get the free version from https://www.atto.com/disk-benchmark/ but you have to fill out a form (getting you on their mailing list). Or you can download it from sites such as MajorGeeks.com (https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/atto_disk_benchmark.html), TechSpot.com (https://www.techspot.com/downloads/7184-atto-disk-benchmark.html), etc.
