How to create bootable VHD in Virtualbox from an Acronis True Image 2019 backup?

Thread needs solution

Acronis itself might've lost its functionality to create VHDs, but it's not hard to create such a backup oneself. For that purpose, it's necessary to first create the backup, which is gonna be a TIB-file.

  1. Create the backup (proprietary TIB-format)
  2. Open Disk Management: Windows-Key + R > diskmgmt.msc > Enter
  3. In Disk Management, click Action > Create VHD > give a name, size large enough to store the backup, choose VHD and Fixed sixe (Recommended) > OK
  4. Once the disk is listed (might take a quarter hour, depending on size), right click on it > Initialize Disk
  5. Right click on disk > New Simple Volume... > finish the process
  6. Right click on disk > Detach VHD
  7. In Acronis True Image 2019, recover your backup and choose the newly created VHD as target
  8. You successfully created a backup in VHD-form.

When trying to boot the VHD (Windows 10 x64 UEFI/GPT) in Virtualbox now though, it stops without an error-message. Having created a GPT-partition, the virtual machine reports having found no bootable disk in MBR-mode, of course.

Does someone know how to finish the process correctly?

Anyone alive out there? Because soon I'm gonna have to start up my antennas in Arecibo in case there's no answer!

Please take a read of forum topic: How to convert .tib to VM? which may offer you some clues for what you are trying to do, in particular:  UEFI mode should be enabled in the virtual machine properties before restoring Acronis image.

Hi! It's possible indeed, see Converting Acronis backup.
