Recover Computer failing

Thread solved

Now is the hour for Acronis True Image to come to my rescue... and it is failing!

I have a Windows 10 laptop (Intel i7-8550U w/ 1 TB HDD + 16 MB Optane) that recently would not reboot due to some issue with the Optane. No idea what the issue was, but the only solution was to reinstall Windows and start over. The PC is operating fine now.

Fortunately, I had recently done a full Acronis backup. Unfortunately, the Recovery isn't working. When I attempt to do a full PC recovery, the PC reboots, spends a few minutes doing some stuff, then presents the attached window to me. "Operation has completed with errors" Not really sure that means. I've tried the "Generate System Report" and a report is created but I can't save the file (it appears Acronis can't access the C: drive).

Any ideas? What should I try next? I would really like to get my PC restored, which is the whole reason I bought Acronis.

Larry, welcome to these public User Forums.

From the above, it sounds as if you are attempting to do the recovery from being booted into Windows using ATI 2019 - doing this requires a reboot into a temporary Linux based environment which has limited support for things like Optane, RAID etc.

The recommended method for any full disk / OS recovery is to boot the PC from the Acronis Rescue Media (created using the 'Simple' method that uses the Windows Recovery Environment files & drivers to create WinPE media).

Note: as you have done a clean install of Windows 10, I would strongly recommend making a new full disk backup of the working OS before attempting to recover your old backup!  This is your safety net in case the old backup doesn't work, taking into consideration that the disk will be wiped in order to recover the partitions in the backup image.

I have never had a system with Optane cache so do not know if this requires any special considerations when doing a recovery, i.e. whether this should be disabled until after the recovery is complete?

Steve, thank you for your helpful reply! (And for reading past my whining!) Your advice to create a new backup was a good one, so I just created one.

I did have a Rescue Media I created before this failure. I tried to use it, but was presented with a blue screen with the teeny tiny word “Recovery” written in the upper left corner. Not sure why that didn’t work.

Fortunately, since I now have a new clean Windows install, I was able to create a new Rescue Media, and that did work. Phew! The restore is now running. With nearly a TB of data to restore, it’s going to take a while. I will report back.

One odd thing I saw when setting up the restore. After selecting the backup file, but before selecting the destination disk, a pop up appeared saying “Unable to lock the disk. Boot your computer from a Linux-based bootable media, and then try again.”  After hitting OK, I was able to select the destination disk and the restore proceeded like nothing happened. Hopefully this is nothing to worry about.

Thanks again! I’ll write back on how things go.

Holy smokes, it worked! I had just about given up, but I’ve got my computer working again. It looks like the Optane is dead, or maybe something on the motherboard. Computer says it is not present, despite reseating it to make sure there wasn’t a connection issue. I’m done with Optane, no love lost there! But I’m a lifelong fan of Acronis now. It really saved the day.

Larry, glad to hear that your recovery was successful, well done for persevering!

There may be a setting in the UEFI/BIOS that activates Optane cache drive, may just need to turn it off (if it is on), reboot and turn it on. I know two of my Gigabyte drives have Optane setting in UEFI.
