TI not showing progress (in app or system tray icon)

Thread needs solution

Pretty sure I seen this before - i.e. before I upgraded to Win 10 1903.. but just saw good example.

So - system is Win 10 Pro 64 bit 1903. With Current Acronis TI 2019 17750. I just added some files to a backed up area - so I told it to "backup now" and I got the icon in the sys tray to say it working, and the app said it working as well, though the app stopped at 22mb and said "calculating time remaining" and the sys tray icon (when hover over ) said 0%. and they both just sat there for 10 mins or so with no change. So I thought it may be stuck - but when I went to the save location for the backup , it had actually backed up 46GB.

I didn't sit staring at it.. but a short time later the sys tray icon was gone.. The app said it had finished, and the backup file was now 62Gb..

~So not a big issue - but anyone else seen this? if so - may be a fix for next release.

Shout if you have questions.

Cheers

Yoji, the system tray icon is just an indicator of activity rather than a reliable status of actual progress.  Often when you see 'Calculating time remaining' ATI is busy in the background using the Microsoft VSS service to create snapshot data for the backup task being performed.  The key point here is that your backup completed successfully and in good time.

I would rather that Acronis focus on the actual backup task being performed than taking time from that task to tell me precisely how many percentage through the task it has achieved!

Not sure what you saying... you seem to be implying I should just shut up because it actually did the backup OK.. like its an unrealistic expectation that it should be able to do both..

Like I said - not a big issue.. I am not expecting it to tell me to 0.001 second accuracy, but if it a feature, it should "work". So just asking if it a common/known problem.. and if others see it - may be it can be fixed in a future update.

Or am I being unrealistic?   and asking too much?

Not at all Yoji.  I would love that the system tray icon and app status was 100% accurate all the time but unfortunately it isn't and I can't remember a time when it was, which is like a lot of other applications to be honest, so I just view as an indication of activity rather than something more than that.

Progress indicators for disk activity is always a guess at best since there is no effective way of estimating future activity on recent past activity.  The files sizes, etc. left to back up may be nothing like the data already backed up.  Doing the activity to make an accurate estimate would just delay the time to complete the backup.

ATI certainly knows the amount of data it has already backed up and displays that in the ATI GUI.  That should give an indication of backup activity even if it cannot indicate the amount of time remaining.  However, sometimes that number seems to stay unchanged for a long time.  I don't know if that reflects ATI's not updating the display or actually not backing up.   And sometimes ATI displays a non-zero number even if ATI has failed to open the backup file.
