Trying to restore files after installing new OS (Windows 10)

Thread needs solution

Hi folks, Vic here. I have been using Acronis True Image 2018 and 2019 for about a year now, and make backups about once a week. Recently I managed to download some malware, so I decided to entirely scrub my C: drive and reinstall Windows 10 afresh. After I finished the reinstall, I installed True Image 2019 again, plugged in my backup drive, and tried to access the files from my most recent backup. Unfortunately, the backup did not appear when I clicked on Backup and then Recovery. It says "No data to recover yet. Create your first backup version to see its content here."

I tried renaming my machine to its original name, but that did not help. I found some documentation on the website that suggested that if I change the user directory to its original name, that would help (original was C:\Users\Vic; new installation was C:\Users\vwalk, till I changed everything back to C:\Users\Vic, including in the Windows Registry.) That did not help!

I also tried double-clicking the latest .tib file on my backup drive using Windows Explorer. That ran for over an hour without displaying any file names for recovery.

So, how can I see my previous backup, so I can restore selected files? Any help would be gratefully acknowledged!

Using Explorer, right click on the backup file and select Mount.  This will mount the file as a drive letter and allow you to navigate it.

Or just double click on the backup file.

Vic, what files are you trying to recover from your old backup here?  This should be limited to only user data, documents etc - you should not attempt to restore such as your old user profile files or any Windows system folders / files, nor application files etc.

If you want to get back to the status your computer had prior to your malware infection, and you have a good, full disk backup created by ATI 2019 without any such infection, then you do not need to do a clean install of Windows to recover this.

The correct process here would be to have a working / test copy of the Acronis Rescue Media (which you could create now and test from your fresh install of Windows with ATI 2019 installed), then boot from that rescue media and restore your whole drive back to how it was by doing a full disk & partitions recovery.

If you are happy with the clean install of Windows and only want to recover your user data, documents etc, then you can do so as already mentioned, by either mounting or double-clicking your backup .TIB file in Explorer, then copying the files to a temporary location (not the original location) and then running your antivirus over all the same before copying or moving them to their final location.

Note: you may be given grief by Windows if it determines that you do not have the correct security permissions to access your files / folders - in which case you would need to use the option in the ATI GUI to 'Add existing backup' then do the Recovery of the files from the GUI, taking care to change the Recovery Options to recover the files without their original security permissions.

Thanks so very much for your kind help! (The most helpful was the suggestion to right-click the file - thanks Enchantech. That worked, when double clicking did not.)

Steve Smith, you're right, of course, a complete restoration would be the best way. But I'm not entirely certain the C: drive was clean as of the last backup, so I am probably just going to pick valuable files to extract from my old C: drive, and see if that will suffice. If not, I can always do a full restore later.

I really appreciate your wisdom and advice!

Vic,

Glad to see you got it sorted and that my suggestion worked for you.
