Win 10 won't start or restart with Acronis USB Backup Drive attached

Thread needs solution

Installed True Image 2019 and backed up just my OS drive to a portable SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure.  My machine -- that is, Windows 10 (Pro, 64-bit) won't start or restart unless I disconnect the portable drive.  Anyone know how to fix this?

Welcome to these user forums.

The common issue when USB drives are connected is if your BIOS boot settings place the drive ahead of the normal Windows boot drive or Windows Boot Manager option, which will cause the PC to look for boot data on the USB drive and fail if this is not found.

Moving the USB drive below the main boot option should resolve this, otherwise more information on what actual error is given will be needed to better understand the issue?

Prior to restart or shutdown of the PC eject the USB drive using File Explorer or the USB icon in the Task View button popup window, right click on the icon, select the drive and click Eject.

You need to go into the BIOS settings and in the category "boot" select the device from which you want to boot, as in your case USB

Some computers have hotkeys to select boot options, usually F10-F12
