Acronis stops after four backups

Thread needs solution

I program Acronis 2020 for five incremental backups and create a new full backup after. It stops after four backups and I have to reactivate it.

I have contacted Acronis. A technician uninstalled my version and reinstalled a fresh one: still the same problem.

Can anyone help?

Daniel, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but too little information to understand what might be happening here?

What version of Windows OS is being used?  Windows 10, 8.1, 7 etc?

What type of backup is being created?  Disks & Partitions or Files & Folders?

What size of source data is involved?

Where are the backup files being stored?  Local / external / network / Cloud location?

Please download the MVP Log Viewer tool (link in my signature below) and use this to review the log file for your backup operation. This should provide more information on what is happening.

Windows 10 64 bits

Full back up, I think everything is baked up.

Source Around 150 Gigabytes

External disk 1 Terabytes.

Thanks for your help,

Daniel

Daniel, thanks for the further information.  Did you download the log viewer and check the logs for any messages about your backup task?

Here it is, I hope so.

Daniel, sorry but the log you posted is for creating the MVP Custom WinPE rescue media not for your backup task issue.

The Log Viewer tool that you need is at this web link.  It doesn't need to be installed, just run and it will open by default to the ti_demon logs folder, which are the logs created during a backup.

I have run it. Must I upload it? Or do you automatically get it?

The log viewer just finds and displays the log data in a convenient for - no sending to Steve (or anybody else).  However, you will probably be able to just copy and paste the displayed log (or at least the significant parts of it) into your forum posting.

I upload it. Also, this problem has appeared when the format tib started to replace the old format.

Daniel, your log file only shows a successful backup.

It does not show any reason why the scheduled backups would stop.

So there is no hope for a solution?

Daniel, can you create an Acronis System Report and then send me a private message with a link to the zip file using a cloud service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.  That would give me the best chance of trying to find out what is happening for your backup task.

See KB 58820: Acronis True Image: Collecting System Report

Daniel, when was the last time you recreated the backup task?  How many backups have run since then?  Does ATI always stop taking the backups after 4 backups, or does it vary?  When you delete the task to recreate it do you have ATI delete the backups or just delete the task?

I don't know if the answer to any of those questions will help, but I'm curious.

I created new full backups many times since a month. Each it stops backing up after exactly four incremental backups. Then I have to click on "backup now" to increment. To start a new back up I had to delete the old one. Also, Acronis technician removed my Acronis 2020 and reinstalled it:the problem remained. I shall try to put SystemReport.zip in the dropbox.

What is your e-mail address in order to write it in my Dropbox where I have downloaded the file System Report.zip?

Daniel, if you use the option in Dropbox to 'Copy link' you can paste the link into a private message to me via the forum by clicking on Send message beneath my name shown on the left side of my posts.

Impossible to find "Copy link" in Dropbox. Where is it located?

Open your local Dropbox folder where the zip file is stored then right-click on the file to see a drop-down menu with the option to copy the link.

Daniel, thanks for the link to the system report zip file.  All the actual backup logs (ti_demon and backup_worker) only show successful operations whether scheduled or run manually.  These logs do not show any error for when the schedule did not run as expected.

The Scheduler2 log does show one error on 26/03/2020 at 04:14 PM suggesting that there was a DEVICE _CHANGE which prevented the scheduled task from being run.

Have there been any device changes for either the Source or Destination drives for this task such as swapping backup drives?

I do not remember any change.

Steve, can you check Daniel's Schedul2 logs for the next wake up times after each of the successful backups. I would expect that after the fourth backup there should still be an entry to reflect that the scheduler should awake again for the fifth one. If that entry is missing, it would be odd. If the entry is there, then what happens at that time?

Bruno, the next wake times are shown in the log extracts above but only for when the task was run on schedule, not for the manual run.

27/03/2020 04:14:00:018 PM  next wake up time = 28.03.2020 16:13:00

The log shows no activity at the above wake time and skips over it as per the entries below:

28/03/2020 01:45:28:430 PM  Time zone: UTC+1.00 (Romance Standard Time)

The System Event log shows that the system was active during the whole period when the scheduled task should have run but has no Acronis specific errors that I can identify easily.

There are lots of DCOM errors (event ID's 10010 and 10016) happening during the day - the nearest of which is: (at approximately the time the scheduler would start to prepare for the task being launched).

Thanks for your help. Have you any idea about what is happening?

Daniel, these DCOM 10016 errors in the system event logs look to be issues with Windows rather than ATI but with no obvious remedy!  Whether they are relevant to this ATI issue is impossible for me to tell you - you would need to open a support case direct with Acronis Support and refer them to this forum topic plus provide them with the System Report zip file for investigation.

Steve, Daniel,

I've taken a quick look at the Schedul2 logs (Steve passed them on to me). Here is where I am focusing...

The task ran on schedule on 3/27 at 4:14pm.
At 5:44 pm the service shut down and restarted at 5:54 pm   (was this a reboot?)
I see what I expect in these entries
3/27/2020 05:54:41:964 PM 00002C0C next wake up time = 28.03.2020 16:13:00
3/27/2020 05:54:41:964 PM 00002C0C SetWaitableTimer(132298819800000000): > error=0
3/27/2020 05:54:41:964 PM 00002C0C OnServiceMainWake: next time = 27.03.2020 22:02:00
This is showing that task 1-2 should cause a wake-up at 4:13 pm to run the next scheduled backup. The second time is showing that at 10:02 pm task 1-1 should run.
At 5:57:28 and again at 5:57:53 pm, I see a series of suspicious messages not present in successful logs. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what they mean but I do suspect that's when/where the failure might be occurring.
Later, when Task 1-1 runs at 10:02 pm, I see this
3/27/2020 10:02:00:017 PM 00002C0C OnServiceMainWake: next time = 28.03.2020 22:02:00
which is telling me that the scheduler no longer has task 1-2 in its sights.

Daniel, can you please tell us how the task is configured with respect to sleep, wake, error recovery etc. What are the Advanced options on the Schedule page? What are the error handling options on the Advanced page?

How often is the computer restarted? Do the failures only occur after a system reboot?

The DCOM errors have been reported repeatedly for a couple years now.  (Since Win 10 1803 maybe?)  There have been many suggested fixes but all have been temporary; the errors would return after the next major Win 10 upgrade.  (The suggested fix in the Tomshardware link seems different from other fixes I've seen.  Maybe it's a better fix.  I'll try it.)

I've never seen a report of any actual problem caused by this error.  A lot of logger error records but nothing worse.  Microsoft has not seemed eager to expend the effort to fix the problem.

I have wondered if the Dcom errors stem from MS itself.  A symptom of user whom do not use an MS account for example as users of local accounts hinder attempts of Windows to phone home.

Please tell me what is my next move: contact Acronis support and tell them to look at your comments on this site? Or, there is nothing one can do?

Thanks,

Daniel

P.S. Must I click on "Mark as Solution"?

Daniel, no need to mark anything as a solution until you have one!

I would suggest creating a new backup task, new task name that is unique, and storing this in a new folder on your backup location, then testing that this new backup will work as intended for the scheme you select?

If you have a persistant issue, ie. it always fails after making just 4 backups, then that is the time to open a further dialogue with Acronis by raising a new Support Case, or continuing one that you have already opened previously.

You are welcome to continue updating this forum topic with the results of your new backup task and we will review these with you in case we can identify any issues contributing to any failure etc.

OK. I shall do as you suggest.

Thanks,

Daniel

Daniel, thanks for your private message (copied below).

After contacting Acronis technical support during months more than five times, they removed Acronis and reinstalled it each time to no avail, the problem improved!

Now the new problem is that Acronis should not keep more than to full backups. I got three or more and Acronis never deletes the third one. I have to do it myself in order to avoid the external hard drive to get full.

Is there any hope somebody can help? The Acronis technicians seem to be useless.

I would suggest creating a new Acronis System Report zip file and sharing a link to this, then I can take a look again at what that shows.

I zipped a certain number of files. I hope there are the ones you need.

Daniel, your logs show that you are still running the last Beta version of ATI 2021 but the Beta has now finished, so you should have upgraded to the release version ATI 2021 #30290 to continue using 2021.

What automatic cleanup settings do you have for your main backup task (DESKTOP-G0K8OOC)?

Also where is this backup being stored?  I am seeing regular errors suggesting that the backup .tibx file cannot be opened followed by retries.

The backups are stored on an external drive called D:

I shall update.

The program to delete files was Avast. I have uninstalled it.

I use now WinThruster. However it does not delete automatically, I have to

run the program in order to clean up.

It is asking a serial number that I cannot get.

Acronis is no more opening.

What must I do?

Daniel, once the ATI 2021 Beta program ended, then the application stops working for everyone using it, myself included.   You either need to purchase a copy of the application or else uninstall it and go back to an earlier version if you have one.

No idea how to purchase a copy. I could find nowhere how to do it.

Please tell me.

Daniel

Daniel, go to the main www.acronis.com website which will take you to the local site for your geography, then click on Personal to see the options for Acronis True Image 2021.

The main options shown are all for annual Subscription versions of ATI, so if you want to get a perpetual (buy once, use for as many years as possible) version, look for the links under the middle subscription option.  Note: to buy an Upgrade you need to already have previously purchased a full perpetual version of an earlier ATI product (2020, 2019, 2018 etc).

Thanks. I was able to follow your instructions and it worked!

Daniel, that is good.

When you configure your backup task, there is no need to use any external application such as either Avast or WinThruster to delete unwanted backup files, as ATI has its own 'automatic cleanup' options that will do this for you.

See the ATI 2021 User Guide section describing 'Automatic Cleanup'.

Automatic cleanup rules

To delete obsolete backup versions automatically, you can set one of the following cleanup rules:

  • Delete versions older than [defined period] (available for full method only) - Select this option to limit the age of backup versions. All versions that are older than the specified period will be automatically deleted.
  • Delete version chains older than [defined period] (available for incremental and differential methods only) - Select this option to limit the age of backup version chains. The oldest version chain will be deleted only when the most recent backup version of this chain is older than the specified period.
  • Store no more than [n] recent versions (available for full method only) - Select this option to limit the maximum number of backup versions. When the number of versions exceeds the specified value, the oldest backup version will be automatically deleted.
  • Store no more than [n] recent version chains (available for incremental and differential methods only) - Select this option to limit the maximum number of backup version chains. When the number of version chains exceeds the specified value, the oldest backup version chain will be automatically deleted.
  • Keep size of the backup no more than [defined size] (not available for local backups created by Acronis True Image 2020 or later) - Select this option to limit maximum size of the backup. After creating a new backup version, the program checks whether the total backup size exceeds the specified value. If it's true, the oldest backup version will be deleted.

Something new.

I made a full backup with the version 2021.

This full backup was only 81 GB compared with the previous ones which were always around 140 GB.

Is this normal? Or some data are no more saved? Or OneDrive is not saved?

Thanks for your help,

Daniel

My understanding is that OneDrive is still excluded by default due to the problems caused by files on demand. Section 4.4 of the ATI 2021 User Guide outlines the procedure by which Office 365 data can be backed-up.

Ian

Edit: Whoops, this is ATI 2020 thread - the same section of the 2020 User Guide applies.

The default exclusions for ATI (all recent versions) can account for the type of difference in size you are seeing.

pagefile.sys, swapfile.sys & hiberfil.sys are all potentially large files.

System Volume Information folders store all Windows Protection restore point data and are also potentially large amounts of data.

OneDrive if using Files on Demand (files stored in the OneDrive Cloud, not locally) are also excluded and can be very large.

Double-click on the backup .tibx file and take a look for the above files.  Note: you need to have Explorer settings to show hidden / system files.  All the above except OneDrive can be recreated by Windows on a normal restart.  Restore point data is turned off by default by Microsoft since around 2017.

A new problem occurred with version 2021.

When I click on "Options", I get "Cannot Open Folder".

Then:

More information about this error and solutions may be available online in the Acronis Knowledge Base.
To access the online resource manually, enter the event code at: https://kb.acronis.com/errorcode/
Event code: 0x00AC0041+0x00550011

Then "There is no information about this error available now".

I think version 2021 is horrible and how can I go back to the previous one?

Daniel, where exactly are you seeing the Options option that you are clicking on when you are getting the error for 'Cannot Open Folder'?  Post screen images if that is easier.

Going back from 2021 will still require that you have a license / serial for an earlier version such as 2020 or 2019 etc, and you would need to completely remove all the ATI 2021 code & data.

OK. An Acronis technician uninstall entirely the 2021 Acronis version and reinstalled it.

The problem is no more there, but for how long?

Furthermore, the technician chose "Backup Sector by Sector". But still the full backup of my C drive is only 64 GB

while the disk size is 150 GB!

Is this normal?

I thought that "Backup Sector by Sector" implied backing up the full drive what ever is on it?

Am I wrong?

Thanks for your help,

Daniel

Backup sector-by-sector will still only backup the used sectors on the disk drive, not the whole disk drive unless you elect to also include unused disk sectors.

Thanks.

How can I know what Acronis backs up on drive C and what is not baked up?

Is there a way?

Regards,

Daniel

Daniel, there are several options that you can try to check what has been backed up.

One is to double-click on the .tibx file in Explorer and work your way through the contents manually, checking folder sizes and number of files etc.

The other method is to right-click on the .tibx file in Explorer, then on the Acronis True Image option, followed by on Mount.  Follow the panels shown to mount the C: drive to a spare drive letter, after which you can use any file comparison utility or sync program to check what is there or missing.

A little too complicated for me.

I shall stay as I am. I checked that the important data are baked up.

Thanks,

Daniel

It seems that the solution to my last question is the following:

Acronis 2020 did not  compress data when backing up while Acronis 2021 compresses data.

Is this correct?

Thanks,

Daniel
