Acronis true image issues

Thread needs solution

Hi

I use a 2018 MSI GL63-8RE laptop with a 128gb nvme ssd

I've read that when trying to clone an old nvme ssd into new nvme ssd it is preferable to mount old one on a usb and then clone it so that boot record gets adjusted. When I tried that my system directly goes to bios and no matter how much I fumble around settings, it wont detect the os on the usb mounted nvme. When I tried to clone it the other way around, it clones successfully and then when I switch off my laptop and swap discs, it starts into start up repair for windows 10. Luckily I backed up all my data and want to know the solution to this issue.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated

Vish, welcome to these public User Forums.

Put simply, Microsoft do not want users booting into Windows from external drives, so moving your original internal drive into an external caddy, hub etc is destined to fail.

The recommendation here is to boot your laptop from the Acronis bootable rescue media to perform this type of operation, i.e. boot from either a USB memory stick with Acronis, or from a DVD disc etc.

See forum topic: Steve migrate NVMe SSD where I have documented (with images) the process that I have used multiple times for my own laptops using Backup & Recovery.
