Backup differential file naming conventions
I submitted a trouble ticket on this a few days ago. No response other than customer support bouncing my ticket back and forth between Acronis divisions.
I find fault in the new backup schemes in that Acronis is altering (appending to or modifying) existing backup images. What happens if I have a power outage or Acronis program failure while making an incremental backup? In my book, I probably just wiped out my known good backup(s).
With that said, I am doing differential backups.
I’ve read KB63444. It doesn’t talk much about naming conventions for differential backups. Here is what he’s seen when doing differential backups:
Backup.tibx 74,825,328 KB
Backup-0001.tibx 176,804 KB
Backup-0002.tibx 270,068 KB
Backup-0003.tibx 2,084,724 KB
Backup-0004.tibx 3,447,560 KB
Backup-0005.tibx 7,400,744 KB
Backup-0006.tibx 76,579,432 KB
Backup-0007.tibx 239,432 KB
So, after 5 differentials, ATI created a new full backup as Backup-0006.tibx.
If Backup-006.tibx is truly a full backup, it should not be dependent on any previous files, correct? And that would tell me its safe to delete Backup.tibx - Backup-0005.tibx using Microsoft Explorer.
I believe guidance is not to delete files with Explorer and instead remove them via the the Acronis program. What happens if I delete the first full backup (and all 5 differentials) from within Acronis? Is Backup-0006.tibx touched in any way?
Sound like the safest thing to do is turn off creating a new full backup after x differentials so that one is not created automatically. Then when I feel its time to create a new full backup, I would move Backup.tibx - Backup-0005.tibx to another directory and let Acronis create a new backup Backup.tibx

The KBs don't address my questions. Can anyone answer those? They are identified with a question mark symbol (?) at the end of the sentence.

There should not be a problem as the previous incremental or full backup areas of the new consolidated .tibx file should still be capable of being used for either further new backups or for recovery operations.

You should see ATI create a small (12KB) .tibx file with the name Backup.tibx which is then used to store only metadata information for the further backups in the version chain.
Your Backup-0006.tibx will remain until you either remove it via the Clean up versions tool, or use the Automatic Cleanup rules to do so.
