Backup kompletter PC viel zu groß
Hallo!

No, the drive is connected via USB. I checked again:
I then also get the message that I should not back up to the drive that is being backed up.

If you click through on the Source panel that defaults to show 'Entire PC', then select 'Disks & Partitions' - how many drives do you see?
When I do this on my own PC with 2 internal drives and 1 external USB drive, the size of my internal drives is correct and the same as the value shown by 'Entire PC' and definitely doesn't include my external USB drive contents.

I see 6 partitions on one drive and then a second drive, the backup drive ("MSFT Storage Space 0.1"). This is not selected by default

I would say that your MSFT STORAGE SPACE 0.1 drive is being included in 'Entire PC' when selected as the Source.
When you go into Disks & Partitions, then only the Windows OS drive & its partitions as selected by default, as shown in your screen image (with 6 partitions).

Yes, this is not a new finding, I wrote that in my first post.
The external drive is clearly not recognized as external:
If I select the files backup option, then select the destination, then click on
external drive, it says that I should connect the external drive.
But why is that and how can I solve it?

As per your duplicate forum topic - KB 61364: Acronis True Image does not support Storage Spaces
Product limitation. Acronis True Image does not support Storage Spaces.
Even if Storage Spaces pool is recognized by Acronis True Image, correct product operation is not guaranteed.

The topic is for Windows 10, I'm using Windows 8.1.
I have combined two external drives as a pool-disk.
The topic says: "Disks that are a part of Storage Space are not recognized by Acronis True Image." A disk from the pool does not have to be recognized, but the pool as a drive. I only set up simply spaces, no mirror or parity spaces. And this is especially useful for large backups.

The KB document title is clear in that the listed ATI versions (2016 through 2021) do not support storage spaces so I doubt that this only applies to Windows 10 provision of these.
I can only recommend that you open a Support Case direct with Acronis to get a definitive answer as to whether your being on Windows 8.1 makes any difference to this statement? I doubt that it will but that is only my personal opinion as another user here.

Thanks, I don't have much hope either! And the free support expired 4 days ago.

Unfortunately support for ATI 2020 ended back in September 2020, 30 days after ATI 2021 was released to the public.
The other option would be to install a 30-day trial version of ATI 2021 and test if the same issue is present, as if so, you can report this to support during that trial period.

I think I have now understood the problem of the pool disk:
I can restore data if individual files are lost. But if the PC has to be set up
again from scratch, then I have no access to the data on a Windows pool disk
because it cannot be read by a different or new operating system:
I have to reconnect the two hard disks for a pool, and all data will be lost.
Thank you for your discussion, it saved me from big surprises!
I wanted to do a full backup and then set up the system again.
