Can't restore single file from ATI2020 Boot Media

Thread needs solution

If I try to restore a single file, the boot media insists on starting to restore all files/folders from the partition.

The backup images (I tried several) were also created with the same ATI2020 Boot Media version 38530 64-bit (downloaded 11 April 2021).

I haven't gotten around to installing the program yet in Windows 1 Pro 64-bit.

I honestly don't want the file bad enough to make it a priority to install the program now, or to restore the whole image to a drive (in part because I don't want to court the issues of multiple active drives; it's bad enough that to get rid of the results of the partial full restores I keep aborting, I need to boot to Hirens because even
RMDIR /S /Q F:\Temp\Drive(C)
as Administrator gets denied access to numerous files like Bootmgr even on F.

The first thing that occurs to me, is why are you using the recovery media to just recover (presumably) one file. I would just navigate to the backup using Explorer (or your preferred file manager) and double click on the backup, which will open the backup; once you have found the file just copy and paste.

Thank you very much for your reply, Ian!

That's absolutely what I would do, but I haven't installed ATI on Windows yet (it's a new enough install that I've prioritized other programs; and when I have time to install a backup program I'm not leaning towards ATI anymore).

And it's what I would do if I wanted the missing file enough.

Understood. What type of recovery media are you using (not convinced it would make any difference but you never know). Is it Linux recovery media downloaded from the Acronis site, or was it created from within ATI, if so was it simple (Windows RE) or advanced (either Windows PE or Linux). Or did you "roll-your-own" (now, there's a dated expression) with the MVP tool?

I have not tried to recover a single file using the recovery media. The only work around I can think of is to go ahead and recover the entire directory to a new location, thus avoiding overwriting the other files, assuming it it not enormous.

@Ian
Sorry for the later reply!

I'm using the Linux media downloaded from ATI (since I didn't have an ATI install to create it from).

However, this morning I downloaded the new version of Hirens PE x64 1.0.2, so it occurred to me to try to mount the .tibx with Hirens and extract the single file.  Worked perfectly!

Maybe it's just a bug with the Linux media.

Incidentally, I would worry but I know the Linux media can do a full disk restore, because as always I tested that immediately upon making the machine's first backup (my motto is that only then do you know you've got a backup).  (And it worked perfectly, aside from me blowing it by booting with two disks with EFI in the machine.)

Glad you managed to sort it out. Not sure why Linux recovery media was being difficult; it is in some ways more limited than Windows RE or Windows PE recovery media.
