Cloning attempt - Unable to lock disk

Thread needs solution

Tried to clone an NVMe primary drive in my Vostro 3670 to a sata drive with my WinPE boot USB stick of TI2020. System had been fully shutdown and error was recurrent. Btw, cannot clone NVMe drives in Linux TI so WinPE is only option from many conversations with Acronis support.

Dave, the method that I would recommend using for migrating between drives would be to use Backup & Recovery rather than using Clone.

Ideally you should always make a full Disk backup of any source drive before attempting to use Clone as a safety net against any errors or issues arising.

The steps I would suggest are as follows:

  1. Create the WinPE Rescue Media using the 'Simple' option.
  2. Make a full Disk backup image when booted from the Rescue Media to an external backup drive.
  3. Shutdown fully, remove the NVMe drive, install the SATA drive.
  4. Boot from the Rescue Media using the same boot mode as used for the NVMe drive, i.e. in UEFI boot mode.
  5. Use the Tools > Add new disk option to prepare the SATA drive using GPT.
Note: no partitions need to be created, leave the drive as unallocated space.
  6. Recover the full Disk backup from step 2 to the SATA drive.
  7. Check the Log when the recovery is finished to ensure all is good!
Note: the log is lost when rebooting out of the rescue media.
  8. Shutdown, remove the rescue media and external drive.
  9. Boot normally into Windows from the SATA drive & check all is ok.
  10. Make a further full Disk backup of the SATA drive.
  11. Shutdown and reinstall the NVMe drive if needed, but check the BIOS settings that it will still boot from the SATA drive 'Windows Boot Manager' option, not from the NVMe drive.
