Cloning From Larger Samsung NVme M2 SSD to Slightly Smaller Samsung NVme M2 SSD

Thread solved

INFO:

My C-drive is a  Samsung 970Pro NVme M2  of 476GB size, and I want to clone it to a  Samsung 980Pro NVme M2 drive which is 465GB in size. Samsung term these both as 500GB drives but actually the 980 is a tad smaller. The total used space of the source drive will easily fit onto the total space of the destination drive.

QUESTION:

Can this be done and how?  Do I just clone as usual using bootable media and Acronis will automatically take care of the size difference?  I do not want the destination drive to have any unallocated space.

Thanks..Gary

Gary, the easiest / safest method of migrating between NVMe M.2 SSD's (in my opinion & experience) is to use Backup & Recovery, not cloning.

See topic: Steve migrate NVMe SSD where I documented the process that I used when upgrading my laptop NVMe SSD drive using Backup & Restore.

Are u saying create a Backup of C drive then recover it to the destination drive..which in my case is the slightly smaller 980Pro.  Do u use bootable media at all or do you do this within Windows.  I have a Desktop PC so may be different to Laptop situation.  Gary

Gary, yes, use bootable rescue media to restore a backup of the original drive to the new drive installed in place of the original one.

I understand that your desktop PC will be different to a laptop and may have 2 NVMe M.2 slots but the method suggested should work exactly the same and has the advantage that the original drive is set aside and cannot be touched by the restore process.

You should not attempt to do this from within Windows as it can require a restart into a temporary Linux based environment where support for NVMe can be problematic, especially if RAID is being used.

Thanks Steve....I like the bit about original drive remains untouched as indicated by your info above.  Just wanting to know if the slight drop in capacity from source drive where the destination drive is about 10gb smaller will be an issue or not.  So recovery to the smaller drive is ok and will work ??  Do I just recover and Acronis somehow sorts out that the source drive is smaller.  As mentioned before the total used space on the source drive will easily fit onto the total space of the destination drive.  Currently my C source drive has 339gb free of total 476gb.

The destination 980Pro will not be substituted in place of original C drive but set aside as a backup if ever needed. With advice u gave me on another post I now regularly do cloning + backups stored on several drives for added security.   Thanks...Gary

Gary, the difference in size should be handled by ATI during the recovery as part of automatic resizing of partitions as needed.  With all the available free space on the source drive, I don't see there being any problems, especially with only a 10GB size difference between the drives.
