File System Error is found (Windows 10 64 bit Professional Edition with Bitlocker on both hard drives)

Running Windows 10 Professional edition 64 bit.  This week I encrypted my entire HP Envy notebook with 2 solid state hard drives with Bitlocker. 

Prior to having run Bitlocker, I never encountered this file system error.

My Bitlocker password was entered so I could access my HP Envy notebook.

Since I just enrypted my entire computer with Bitlocker, I configured a new Incremental backup on the entire computer (first one is a full backup). 

I let it run only to come back several hours later with the following:

"File System Error.  Consider checking the disk using Check Disk Utility.

I right cliked on Properties on the Passport external hardrive and it said there were no errors.

What is causing this issue to prevent the entire backup using Acronis True Image 2020?

Thank you for any assistance you can offer on resolving this.

Fredric, the first task you need to perform here is to identify which drive is giving the file system error as it does not have to be only your external Passport drive.

Download a copy of the MVP Assistant log viewer tool and use this to look at the logs to see if they show any issues during the operation process?

The latest version of the new log viewer tool is at the link below.
MVP Assistant Version 2.6.3 is available.

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) or using Cloning then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant, i.e. Media Builder.

The Schedule2 log contains information related to scheduled task but is one of the more difficult logs to read / work through.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

I just downloaded and extracted the MVP Assistant Version 2.6.3  and it is showing there are 13 files extracted to Google Drive.  I do not know what I am supposed to do from these files.  Can you please tell me which to clik in order to look at the logs?  Since I am clueless as to what I am looking for, are these logs for each of my solid state hard drives in my HP Envy laptop?

Frederic, The .zip file for the MVP Assistant contains a README.txt file to tell what to do.

Basically, just create a folder for the MVP Assistant, unzip all the files to that folder and then run the MVPAssistant.exe.

"Since writing this last reply to yours...I tried double cliking the mvpassistant.exe file.  I kept getting an exception.  I cliked to continue.  The menu opened but nothing is operational such as cliking on View Logs.  But now I'll read the readme file to learn how to run it.

I Googled if I can backup a Bitlocker encrypted system.  EaseUS says you can and offer a Free Download but of course then they want to charge you to run it.  I do not wish to use EaseUS since I have been using Acronis for many many years.

I went into Control Panel and Bitlocker Ecryption.  I know when I booted up my laptop I had to put in the Bitlocker Password, but I see my 2 drives:

C which offer the opportunity to suspend Bitlocker or turn it off.  If I clik turn it off it says it will take a very long time to decrypt.  If I clik on suspend, I can do that.

But for the 2nd hard drive F that has bitlocker turned on, it doesn't offer me the chance to suspend.  Only to turn it off and that would be the same thing, take a very long time.  

I wonder if these are the reasons, I am getting the File system error?

But again, I do not know and wish I could run the MVP Assistant application.

As of now I do not have a valid backup and that is causing a lot of consternation and uneasiness!!

I cliked on Demon and there are 5 logs in red.  I do not see how to save them.

I never had any issues with my hard drived until I encrypted with Bitlocker.

What do I need to do to highlight the contents of all 5 Demon logs in red with their details showing to the right with the times of the error?

I keep trying to undersand this MVP Assistant program Steve!

Fredric, you may need to tell your security / antivirus software to allow the MVP Assistant to run correctly plus you should ideally be running it as Administrator to get the full benefits of the tool, including access to the advanced Rescue Media builder feature.

With regards to BitLocker, then Acronis run from within Windows can backup encrypted drives provided that those drives are unlocked before Acronis attempts to access them.

Acronis cannot backup a locked encrypted drive as it cannot identify what the drive is, i.e. cannot see partition structures or data content.

I do not have any partitions.  I only had backups with Acronis True Image 2020.

The only red logs I can see are under Demon but again, I do not know how to save those 5 log files.  When I clik on each of the red log files under Demon and clik on Raw it opens up an entire listing of everything you would comprehend but I certainly do not unfortunately.

When I clik on Schedule2 I see the logs going all the way back to Sept. 2022.  Nothing appears in red.

When I clik on the file in Schedule2 for June 11, although it is in black it says, "There was a problem reading the log file.  A known error has occurred in reading this log file.  This can occur when the AcrSch2Svc service has a lock on the file. Restarting the service may unlock it.  Would you like to restart the service now?

Fredric, the simplest option here is to launch the MVP Assistant, then in the Log Viewer, select Demon so that the word is highlighted, then click on 'Log Files' in the top menu bar to show its drop-down menu, click on 'Open Location' to open the folder in Explorer which will then allow you to zip some of the most recent log files from that Demon folder.

Post a link to a cloud share where I can download the zip file from, i.e. using OneDrive, DropBox, Google Drive etc.

If you are making Disks & Partitions or Entire PC backups then do the above for Backup Worker as that is where those logs are found.

I allowed the MVP Assistant in Windows Defender and ran as an administrator.

I just tried to post the link to both files on Google Drive but it said I am not allowed to post links inside the text. I removed both and then tried cliked on the paper clip above for "link" but I got the error message to removed them within the txt.

I went back to Feb on each log file you requested.  Never had any issues until I encrypted the entire system with Bitlocker.

Like I said earlyone in this discussion, when I turn on my computer, the first thing that appears is to put in my password for Bitlocker.  Is that all I need to do to allow Acronis to be able to do a full and then subsequent incremental backup on the C and F internal hard drives?

I also read that knowledge based article you referenced.  My question when I enter my Bitlocker password immediately upon booting up my laptop it says to unlock the hard drive is does that qualify in terms of it being unlocked for Acronis to do the full and incremental backups every week on my schedule?

If not, does it mean that every time I want to do the backups regularly, am I going to have to unencrypt both of my C & F drives?  That would be a major hassle.  Hoping this is not what needs to be done and the reason for getting the file error that we're attempting to resolve.

Anyways, you're the guru, I am just a beginner with a few years of doing things.

Fredric, I have had to request access for the shared files...

If you enter the encryption password when starting the PC / Windows, then Acronis should be able to see all the drive contents and not be concerned about encryption or access.

You can check by trying to create a new Backup task and select the encrypted drives.

Note: if you backup task was created prior to activating BitLocker, then you need to reselect the Source & Destination for the task if these reference the protected drives - this is because the drive identifiers will have changed.

Yes, that is exactly what I did do when I realized the incremental backup I was doing last Saturday had been originally created without Bitlocker encryption on both hard drives. Those previous ones were succesfful.  So this was the first incremental backup but from the original unencrypted system.  

So I formatted the external Passport hard drive and setup an entirely new Full backup with subsequent incremental ones after I had access to the computer by inputting my Bitlocker password.

I left it run and when I came back several hours later saw the same exact error message that I posted on this post a few days ago.

So I'll wait to allow you time to look at the links.  I just granted the request on both links to share them with you.

The same snapshot error is present for all the logs from June 10th onwards.

The Demon logs from June 11th suggest that the backup was either created prior to implementing BitLocker or else is a variation on the VSS snapshot error given the error messages:

From the MVP Assistant, you can go to the Settings/Acronis Configuration tab to download and save the VSS Doctor app. Then from the Acronis Configuration section, the Acronis Utilities menu has a command to open the VSS Doctor,.

Followed both of your suggestions to download the MVP Dr.

I'm going to attempt another Incremental backup (initial one will be a Full one)

I have the computer Bitlocker password entered.

I will create an encrypted password protected backup on the Password as I have always done.

I'll report back most likely in the morning as it is almost 9pm Central here.

Well all was well for about 175mb being backed up.  Then it abruptly stopped and said, "the latest backup has been stopped. It will be restarted at 10:02pm. File system error is found.  Consider checking the disk using Check Disk Utility."

I let it continue to see what would happen.  It tried 3 more times to do the backup....then would abruptly stop with the exaxct same issue of a file system error is found. The file system error was found at 10:01pm, 10:35pm, 11:10pm & 11:44pm.

When I came back this morning, my laptop was turned off.  I have it set to go into hibernation.  

I also have the screen saver enabled.

But this never prevented Acronis from successfully completing the backup.

Fred, there seems to be a little bit of confusion that has crept into this topic!

The VSS Doctor does not have any relevance with regards to your external My Passport storage drive.  All VSS snapshot data is stored on your internal drives, and in particular on the internal drive that is selected in the task Source.  So if you have selected drive C: then snapshots are stored in the reserved areas of that drive by the backup process.

As the VSS Doctor is not identifying any issues in its report and not showing any Event log entries for VSS issues, then this brings us back round again to there being a genuine File System error on your internal drive(s).

A File System error in this context can be a corrupt system file or similar rather than being a fault with the drive itself.

I would recommend running the following commands on your system to see if these find and resolve any file system errors.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow

Note: these commands can be long running, so please allow time for them to complete if any appear to be slow!

I ran all of the commands on the system as Administrator on a cmd command.

It succeeded without finding any errors. My question is that is on the C drive.

But what about the 2nd hard drive I have installed as the F drive?

 

Fred, the previous set of commands work on the Windows OS and file system so is not addressed to a specific drive other than where these components are located.

The only remaining suggestion here is to run CHKDSK /F against both C: and D: drives, this will detect that these are SSD drives and work as needed to check the logical blocks of the drives.  Besides this, then you should check the drive maker support web site for any diagnostic tools that can check the whole drive operation.

What if I unencrypt both C & F drives and do a new Full backup?  I believe it will succeed since I never had any issues completing the full and incremental ones without Bitlocker.

Then I could encrypt just the C drive and do a completely new Full backup leaving the F drive unencrypted and see if that succeeds.

Finally, unencrypt the C drive but encrypt the F drive and see if that new one succeeds.

Something is interfering with this Full and incremental backup and I really need to do a Full backup with Bitlocker turned on.

As shown above, if you attempt to check an active drive such as C: then it can give one or both of the responses shown above - the safest action is to not dismount an active drive but to schedule the check on a restart of the PC.

Rather than needing to decrypt your drives, try creating a series of new partition backups in separate tasks, i.e. focus on a single drive and just backup that drive.  Does it work?  If not, try changing the source selection to omit one of the small system partitions and try again.

Fred, for the test backups of a single drive, you just need to click on + Add backup for a new task, then in the Source panel, click through the default option of 'Entire PC' and you will see further options that include 'Disks & Partitions' - select that option, which will then show you a choice of the same.  Select just one Disk drive - this will automatically select all the partitions for that disk drive.

The purpose here is to isolate where the error is originating from, i.e. is it from C: or another drive?

I ran the backup as you suggested.  The C drive completed its backup.  I forgot to check off validate, but did that after and it was valid.

I then attempted to backup the second solid state hard F drive. I just came back and saw it failed and it has reattempted to backup again.  I stopped it.

So what would you suggest I do to fix the F drive.  I never had any issues with it prior to encrypting with Bitlocker.

Also. I did the chkdsk as you also suggested.  But not sure what to look for.  I googled it and it told me to go to Administrative Tools in Control Panel.  I followed the instructions but again, I am clueless what to look for.  Obviously there is something that is preventing the backup on the Solid state F drive.

I think I found what is the issue on the F drive.  I went into File Explorer to see what is on the F drive.  When I cliked on it, it came up with Bitlocker.  I had to enter my Password.  I didn't do that when I did the backup on the entire system or when I did the F drive with partitions to attempt to isolate the error message. I'm attempting another backup now having entered the Bitlocker password on the F drive.

Off to sleep now.  I'll check back in the morning.  Hoping that the backup and validation succeeds.

The issue seems to have been fixed.  It was the password for the F drive causing the file sytem error.

The backup last succeeded and validated.

Now, I'll do the entire system backup after first entering the Bitlocker password for the F drive.
