Nonstop backup notification change

Thread solved

So I created a Nonstop backup. I wanted to keep an eye on it since it was new, and notice when it finished the long initial backup.

All went well, including the email notification that it had successfully completed the backup. Of course I got another notification 5 minutes later that it had again successfully completed a backup. And so on since then, unless I pause the backup. I'm getting a very large number of notifications in my inbox now, so I figure, great, I'll just turn the Success! notification off now.

Oops. You can tweak the options all you want, but once you label something Nonstop, then everything is set in stone and there is no longer a button for Options. (Yeah, I should have thought this through a little bit more at the beginning.)

So now I have the option of either living with a new Success! email every five minutes, or deleting the Nonstop backup and creating a new one, along with the longer initial backup. Seems like there ought to be a way to tweak at least some of the options for Nonstop. (I can see that changing some of them might not work well, but those could be grayed out.)

Alternatively, I figure there's got to be a config file somewhere that can be edited. I see the option I want to change in my Saved Settings, but I can't see how that will help.

Any thoughts? Anyone dealt with this situation before?

Dave, I am not aware of any means for tweaking nonstop backup once it has been started. I had not noticed the 5 minutes between email notifications problem. However, it may depend on how notifications are set up. It appears in your case it is when setting the parameters for nonstop backup rather than the way I do it - rely on account defaults set via Settings Tab in the ATI User interface.

I have a suspicion that that setting does not apply to nonstop backup; I do not recall ever having got a message about non-stop backup. Just checked my archive of emails and none for nonstop backup - for some reason I have not received backup related emails for the PC on which I was using nonstop backup since November; other PC for the same user account are getting backup status emails.

Not sure how much any of this helps

Ian

Hello Ian,

Actually, that was very informative. I appreciate your research. I hadn't really considered using the online notifications instead of the desktop program notifications but that might work (though the inconsistency you report does give me pause). Maybe I'll just use the online notifications in the future, though you don't get as much control over those.

And I wouldn't describe what I'm experiencing as a "5 minutes between email notifications problem." I think that Nonstop only really writes changes every 5 minutes, so I'm not surprised that I get notifications at 5 minute intervals. The problem for me is that I can't change the notifications after the backup starts. And you are correct that this is because of options / parameters set for the Nonstop rather than the account defaults which produce the online notifications.

Well, it looks like there's nothing else to be discovered on this one, so I'll mark this as solved and just add it to the feature request list.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave, activating global settings is a no-risk step as it is easily reversed. Using nonstop backup has a steep learning curve as it is so different for other forms of backup. I only started using it to assist another user who was having problems. For my purposes I find it is overkill.
