Restoring a Backup to 256 GB SDD created on a 128 GB SSD

Thread needs solution

Using Acronis True Image 2020 Build 25700 on a WIN10 64Bit laptop.

I have a 128GB SSD ( Boot drive + Windows OS) and 1TB HDD for other data.

I always do a Full PC backup once a week on to a External HDD.

Now I am running tight on the 128GB HDD and hence planning to change it to a 256GB HDD.

Question is this : Can I go ahead with a regular Restore session after I change the SSD or should I specifically create a different type of Backup for this scenario where the original SSD and new SSD differ in size ?

Raghunathan, your normal full PC backup should be fine for doing the restore, but if this includes both drives, then you may find it easier to make a standalone separate backup of only the 128GB SSD and do this from the Acronis Rescue Media so that it doesn't mess up any of the regular weekly backups.

One important point is to ensure you match the BIOS mode used by Win 10 when booting from the rescue media.  Run the command: msinfo32 in Windows and look at the BIOS mode setting - if this says UEFI then use the same for the rescue media, if Legacy...

Note: you may find that the restore does not automatically resize your OS partition to use all the new space on the larger SSD, if so this is easily resolved by using a third-party partition tool.

Download a copy of the free MiniTool Partition Wizard software and install this, then using the tool, move any partitions that are shown after the OS partition to the end of the new SSD space, then expand the OS partition into the freed unallocated space.
