TI 2016 backup on TI 2020 version

Thread solved

OK, I 'allowed' my wife to buy the 3 PC Upgrade. DID not investigate but I wanted to stay current, and her back-ups are long, figured it might be a bit faster.

Now of course I look here and see in the announce this:

Enhanced Backup Technology (new backup format)

So, my question is what about my 2016 backups? Can they be read and restored by 2020's TI? I'm not sure I want to try it out to see.

Hi Irv,

Yes, 2020 can still handle the older backups.  By default, in 2020, new DISK or PARTITION backups will use the newer .tibx format.  Any existing backups (those .tibs already from the previous version), will still continue to work as usual.

At this time, any new file/folder backups in 2020 also still use .tib.  And in beta testing, ANY backups using the rescue media were also still .tib.  I haven't had a chance to test an offline backup with the public release yet to see if that still holds true or not.

As far as backwards compatibility, you will not be able to restore any new .tibx backups from 2020 with older rescue media, but you should still be able to restore 2020 .tib backups with older rescue media.

Keep both on hand, just in case though.

Thanks... I did make new Rescue media on the 2 PC's. Good thing I posted here as I was going to destroy the old DVD. I'll save both now.

Excellent.

If anything happens to it, you can download an older rescue media from your account too.  Just be aware that the default .iso posted to your account and available for download is the default Linux rescue media.  While it is usually fine in many cases, it is becoming aged in regards to driver compatibility and is missing some of the features in more modern Windows Rescue Media that can be created within the application itself.  Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't allow people to legally create this and distribute it - instead we can only build it on existing machines that are licensed and used by the owner of the rescue media.

Hi Irv Spalten ,

Acronis True Image 2020 can restore Backups made with Acronis True Image 2016. However, Acronis True Image 2020 can't read any Comments you might have made with the Backups.
