TIBX files don't backup correctly from WD MyCloud to WDMybook

I have an odd problem. I have been backing up one of my computers via TI 2020 using the new tibx file system to a WD Mycloud EX2 which works fine. However I then make a backup of the MyCloud TI files to a WD MyBook using WD's proprietary backup software via usb. The MyBook is then stored in another physical location.

The bizarre problem is that when the files are backed up to the MyBook, they add up to more than 3 times the size they are reported to be on the MyCloud. Looking at the Mybook files in Windows explorer, every TI backup appears to have been copied as both a full and incremental backup even for backups that are labeled only as incremental. This means that on the MyBook, instead of having (as I have it set up on TI on the computer) 3 full backups, each with 3 incremental backups, each full back up is copied again with every incremental, tripling the size of the backup compared to the size reported for the original backups on MyCloud.

So in Windows Explorer, the MyBook shows a full backup, then an inc file even larger than the first full backup, then a second inc file even larger than the first inc file, then a third even larger than the previous one. This situation is not the case with the original files on the MyCloud where Windows Explorer shows backup files as they should be - one large full backup and then 3 much smaller inc backups (stored, of course, with the full backup), then the next full etc.

Asking Western Digital about this is a lost cause because their support is so extremely poor if not nonexistent.

Any ideas why this would be happening and what I could do about it. The MyBook fills up very quickly this way, and deleting duplicate files is impossible.

Steven, welcome to these public User Forums.

From your description above, this is an issue created by the WD's proprietary backup software, not related to the Acronis task that created the original source backup .tibx files on your WD Mycloud EX2 drive.

I would suspect that the WD backup is running either too often or when ATI is updating the backup files but I have no experience in that backup software so am just speculating.  It may be that it is trying to do some form of incremental backup based on changes detected instead of just mirroring the files from the EX2 drive to the MyBook one.

You could try using the integrated Windows Robocopy utility from your computer to mirror the backup files between the two WD drives unless you can find a Rsync application that would run directly on the WD drives to mirror only changed data instead of whole files.

The other option would be to create a second backup task from your computer to the MyBook drive and forget about doing the copy between drives.

You say you are using the WD backup software to backup from MyCloud to MyBook.  Might I ask which backup utility you are using?  There are 3 different ones that I am aware of.  They are Acronis True Image WD Edition, GoodSync for WD, and WD Backup.  Of these 3 I would recommend using GoodSync for WD for your purpose.  GoodSync will create mirror images of the files you want from device to device.

I have been using the WD backup which is supposed to be incremental. I just downloaded Goodsync for WD and installed it on both my pc and the Mycloud, and just tried to set up a job to do the backup but I'm not sure how to select the target location. goodsync doesn't show the Mybook which is connected by USB. I tried typing in the name of mybook as listed on the Mycloud panel as an unlisted server but it says it can't find the path, so I'm stuck.

I just figured out what I was dong wrong with the Goodsync gui. I didn't have a folder selected under MyCloud in the left hand tree. Now everything is working OK.

Spoke too soon with the above post. Now the problem has shifted to this: My WD MyCloud is 3TB with 1.77tb used. I followed Goodsync's instruction to delete all files in the target folder and then initiated a Goodsync backup. After running for five hours, it is telling me it will take 7 (seven) days to complete the one-way backup. This, of course is ridiculous, so I paused the backup then deleted the job. Now that I know Goodsync can't handle the load, I'm back to trying to figure out how to do this backup from MyCloud to Mybook. Any suggestions?

Another question: If I can't get the WD backup program to correctly copy the TI files to my MyBook, is it possible to either go back to the original TIB format or reinstall TI 2019? The Old format copied fine.

Steven, I would suggest staying with ATI 2020 rather than back-tracking to 2019 but submit Feedback to Acronis about your reasoning for wanting to stay with using .tib files and having a way of selecting the format to be used for your backups!

Have you considered having a second backup direct to your MyBook rather than copying from the WD Cloud storage?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll checkout Acronis perhaps allowing me to use TIB instead of TIBX. I"ll also think through your suggestion of a backup directly to MyBook instead of backing up from MyCloud.

I have two desktops running win10 - identical machines. Both are running ATI 2020, build 25700 although they were each upgraded to 25700 at slightly different times. My wife's ATI saves backups as tibx. My machine, however, saves them as tib. Of course with my tib machine I have no trouble with backups from MyCloud to MybookBoth. Both computers are set up as Disk backups not file and folder. So I REALLY don't understand what's going on here!

Of course there is the issue that I've been living in an alternative universe for years.

One more question: Since differential backups in the new file format are not lumped together with the full backups, WD's copy backup might not misread the files. The only down-side to this would be that the differential backups take up more space. Does this seem like a reasonable solution?

Steven, using differential backup files might be a solution if the extra space requirements are not an issue and you ensure that all files are being mirrored to preserve the integrity of the backup chain(s).  You would need to test this out for yourself to confirm it works as expected for you.
