True Image QuickConnect
Hi, Right now my backup is directed through my local IP and it works(when I'm home).
Is it possible to change it so I can use QuickConnect so I can send my backup no matter where I am?
Junior.

Junior,
By QuickConnect are you referring to the Synology NAS QuickConnect feature?
If yes what you should be able to do is to create a new task in True Image and designate the destination for the task to be the QuickConnect. As long at True Image can make the connection it should work. Essentially the only difference here is that in the present task your NAS is a local or LAN connection. With the new task your NAS is an internet or WAN connection. From what I can tell this Synology QuickConnect is a VPN tunnel for your mobile PC to the NAS.
In theory, this should be transparent to True Image. In practice you may find it undesirable from a practical stand point. You need to be aware that bandwidth of your connection while you are away will likely by much more limited than that of your local connection therefore, total time to run the backup task may be so long that it is impractical to do this.

Bob, the Synology QuickConnect feature uses a normal "http://quickconnect.to/Synology_Name" URL format for redirecting you to the web page for the NAS where users can open the Control Panel etc. It routes via the Synology website so that the user doesn't have to remember what the local IP address is.
I very much doubt that this could be used by ATI as a destination location.

Yeah, not sure either but I do know that you can do file sharing which means you can upload files to the URL. So if you put the URL in the destination path and that proved to make a valid connection you should be able to get it to work. This would be akin to the webdav experiment I ran sometime ago you might recall.

Putting my QuickConnect URL in the 'Back up to' path box doesn't allow me to get an Ok button to go any further with configuring the backup task.

Once you input the URL hit the Enter key and wait a bit. If I'm right It should popup the credentials box. Once you enter the credentials then the destination should become viewable.
I tried this locally to a TerraMaster NAS I have which resides on subnet of my LAN, effectively a different network. I first created a web server on the NAS then enabled webdav service which assigned secure port number 9900 to the location which I named Backup. So my URL ended up as \\TNAS-XXXXXX\Backup\. I then setup a backup of my system OS disk and selected destination as the above address. During setup of the webdav share I set access to my NAS user account. Credentials to this account already exist on this NAS so after I entered the path above and it opened immediately. I added a folder to the location and that was successful. I then ran the backup task and it is just completing as I write this. Backup of 76.6GB took 11 min. 31 secs.
This should work from a remote location as well. The QuickConnect should set up the path and port for you when you enable File Sharing. File Sharing uses the HTTPS protocol so it is a secure connection. What does your URL look like? It should start with two backslash marks followed by either the IP address:port number or something along the lines of my example.

Steve,
Is your file sharing setup with a user account that already is authenticated in TI? If yes the connection test or logon attempt will fail as Windows restriction of only one network session kicks in.
That fact that you get the credentials box alone indicates that TI has found the destination. My suggestion is to Cancel the Credentials box and see if you can navigate to the file share folder in the directory tree. It will like be found under This PC. Mine was.

Bob, I only access the NAS through ATI normally and already have backups setup to it using normal SMB, so no issues with connecting using the normal \\nas\backup format, but was testing the \\quickconnect.to\nas\backup which failed on the credentials prompt.

Steve,
Okay, did you try to Cancel the prompt to see what would happen? If yes I suspect that nothing happened?
It may not work due to the prompt. Can you describe the file sharing setup process? Do you set that up as a user which I would say is typical? If yes, can you create a new user and enable file share for that user, then run the backup test again to get the prompt to appear, then authenticate the connection?
I believe it is clear that TI finds the connection but cannot authenticate to it probably by virtue of the Windows restriction of only one connection per share. Having another user added and authenticated to the file share has a very good possibility of making it work I would say.

Bob, clicking on cancel for the credentials just leaves me with the normal choices which include making the connection directly to the NAS which will succeed when chosen. Using a second user credentials gives the same connection failure.
The share on the NAS is working fine when using the normal access methods, including for using rsync from Linux, so the issue here comes down to using \\quickconnect.to\quickconnectID type format for access which is then trying to route via the internet to the Synology routing service.
Note: using normal http to the same quick connect address works fine and credentials are accepted.
To put this in context, my testing was purely in response to the OP of this topic asking about using QuickConnect. I deliberately do not attempt to run any backups to my Synology NAS when not connected to my local network due to the size of data transfer that would be involved.

Steve, thanks a lot for your extremely helpful information as i need help with my easy recipes project.
Allan, have you found the answer to your question so far?
