2021 Rescue Disk vs 2019

Thread needs solution

All I use is the WindowsPE rescue disc and we recently upgraded from 2019 to 2021 and the changes between the 2 have made it unreliable and unusable to clone/backup/restore.  One example is that for older computers with MBR disks and running a CLONE within a UEFI bootup will make the resulting clone fail to boot in the original system from the successfully cloned drive.  This used to work in 2019 with NO issues.

Next example is a brand new Lenovo T15 that was backed up to a .tibx file and then attempted to be restored on another exact same model comes up with a prompt to RESTART the computer, and if you allow it to restart you end up in the same spot every time with it wanting to restart.  The older 19 had no issues with making a .tib file and restoring to the same computer with the issue.

These are major changes in 21 that have not only made it less reliable but also not compatible with certain computers that had no issues before.  I would recommend going back to the old code for the rescue disk.

Thanks for your time!

Tim, the cloning will take on the BIOS boot type of the hosting OS.  I.E. if you take an MBR legacy disk and boot into a UEFI WinPE or a different full OS that is booted in UEFI mode, the clone will be converted to UEFI as well :(

This is something the MVP's and other users have submitted feedback on several times and suggest you submit as well!

To me, a clone should always be an exact copy of the source drive with no manipulation or change based on what system it is preformed from (WinPE rescue media or a fully booted OS running True Image).

For now, all you can do is go back and ensure you are booting your WinPE in legacy mode if you intend to clone a legacy drive.  Use your bios one time boot menu to ensure you are booting it in legacy mode.  This assumes your motherboard allows for legacy booting or can be changed to allow it.  Check out this reference KB article:

Yes, I do realize the workaround by booting to legacy, but it wasn’t required in the past.  How do I submit this as feedback?  Thanks for the reply!  Any ideas on the restart prompt issue we experienced?

Hello Tim,

I've registered your feedback as a vote for the change request TI-179333 Allow selecting the boot mode (BIOS or UEFI) after recovery/cloning, thank you!
