Cyber Security at the forefront

Expect Cyber Security to play a large role in Acronis future products.  A link to an informative story appears in post 2 of this thread.

Interesting article, Enchantech!  It explains a lot, and is a harbinger of things to come.  The last section of the article is especially illuminating:

Focus on partners
Focusing on its growing partner network is critical to the company’s strategy for rapid growth.

For more information about the "partners" who now are the focus of Acronis's strategic plan, one can read this announcement about the new CyberFit Partner Program.

So the "real" customers who matter most to Acronis appear to be corporate Cloud service providers.  A representative of one of these companies is quoted as saying "We’ve always been able to count on Acronis to understand our company needs."  Is there any of us individual home users (or even small businesses) who can say the same?

My answer to your question would have to be a resounding Yes.  For your information it is the True Image (individual user) product that drives the development of the business products.  Many of the capabilities found in the business products have roots in True Image.  So how can you say that individual users and small business are NOT important to Acronis?

Let's just wait for the release of ATI2022.  If there is no perpetual (non-subscription) license offered, and if it does not have the capability to truly uninstall/disable Cyberprotection, then we'll have our definitive answer.

If you believe that the majority of users are  against cyber protection and/or subscription sales models you are sadly mistaken.  There is plenty of evidence that says otherwise.  Don't be fooled by the complaint department pages of this Forum to be representative of the whole user base because it is not.

First of all, although we have apparently have some differences of opinion, I want to make it clear that my intention is to keep this discussion friendly (or at least cordial), in case the tone of my messages is not coming across adequately.  So my comments/questions below are sincere requests for information, and not intended to be sarcastic or otherwise rhetorical in nature.

There is plenty of evidence that says otherwise.

If you have access to such evidence, sharing it would be helpful.  I think there are several users on this forum who have been put off by Acronis's talking points about the preferences of the "majority" of users, and who have questions (and even doubts) about this silent majority.

Since our disagreement is in effect about whether Acronis listens to the small-time users, do you have any insight about what communication channels the "silent majority" has been using to convey their preferences to Acronis?  To the uninitiated, this forum would seem to be main mechanism for individual users to communicate whether their needs are being met or not (even though it is apparently staffed only by a single Acronis employee).  While I agree that there is likely a significant fraction of ATI users who never post in this forum, my assumption would be that such users also are unlikely to be independently reaching out to Acronis to communicate their preferences about licensing models and integrated cyberprotection.

I full agree - I have never been contacted by Acronis even as an MVP to ask my view on these changes and I have not heard of any other users being so contacted by them!

My personal opinion is that silence from the Acronis community is being taken as agreement or permission to make these changes with no such public consultation.  Acronis are being guided by other factors in this new direction than from individual users.

At the end of the day, Acronis have a business to run and products to sell - the judgement on whether they have made the correct decisions on moving into the Cyber Protection arena will ultimately be shown in their sales results and customer retention data once they actually launch the proposed new application to replace True Image, and users are able to make valid judgements on how these perform in terms of their expectations and their systems performance & application footprint etc.

I suspect that we all will need to wait until some time in 2022 for when such new products are brought to any beta testing that we can try for ourselves.  Until then, I will continue to not use the ATI 2021 Cyber Protection features in favour of my existing protection choices!

Okay, the link below should be of interest to everyone posting here.  Note that the information displayed is based on a Worldwide search purposely because Acronis True Image is marketed on a worldwide basis.

Google Trends Search

The next link is an independent blog post review of True Image 2021 and as such I believe can be considered unbiased although others may have a differing opinion.  I will comment that I have read a few blog posts and reviews that are very similar to this one.

Every successful company who sells a product especially software has a good marketing team to perform the research necessary to formulate direction for product improvement.  Although I have no intimate knowledge of how such research is performed at Acronis, I am certain that it has been done and I find no justification for believing otherwise.  There are many metrics these days from which such information can be gathered.  Some that stick out to me are in app customer experience data gather from the installed user base.  In app feedback also can be a good source of information.  Another avenue are sales review posts from customers on sites like Amazon, Newegg, etc..  My bet is that with the latter reviews of this nature vary country by country.

I believe Steve Smith has a valid point in that Acronis has a business to run and products to sell.  How successful or not that is depends largely on marketing research and to that end I believe they have done their homework.

I don't begrudge Acronis the right to pursue profits, nor do I claim that their marketing department hasn't done their homework.  I just happen to believe (based on the evidence before me) that the conclusion of their market analysis was that greater profits are to be had from pursuing bigger pockets, i.e., the corporations who could become part of their CyberFit Partners Program, as opposed to catering to the users who frequent the "complaint department pages" of this forum.

I wasn't sure what we were supposed to learn from the Google search statistics on "Acronis True Image 2021", but I played around a little in the Google Trends site and found it interesting that searches on ATI appeared to be focused in Russia, while searches on "ransomware" appeared to be focused in North America.

So the latest numbers I have seen for customers of Acronis products show the following:

  • 50,000+ Partners (MSP's)
  • 5.5 Million Prosumer's (Consumer + Small Business)
  • 500,000 Business customers
  • 150 Countries served

What the Google stats suggest is that interest in current product offerings on a worldwide basis has had its share of peaks and valleys but the trend line has been a slight increase over time.  I believe this would suggest that in a broad sense that the product is in general headed in the right direction.  Others viewpoints may vary.

YES agrees that security should be at the forefront. Director's interview: "Today's reliance on data creates new challenges that companies have never had to face before. Existing systems were not designed for such challenges. Addressing them requires a new data management and protection approach that focuses on data protection, availability, confidentiality, authenticity, and security. Our selection of cybersecurity solutions is specifically designed to work on all fronts." These are the words of the director of Acronis himself, and he states that cybersecurity plays an important role.

Ferguson,

Yes, the statement is true and yes, cybersecurity does play an important role in data security.

All I know is I am looking for a new backup software, I hate all this bloated crap subscription, mobile, etc..

I just want to use the backup tools.

I am so confused about what this is anymore, I use ATI2020 I have disable a lot of it. Not going to upgrade to the new Cyber Crap.

I don't want to login, I don't a bunch of background services. Just want to make backup on my own terms.

Been using ATI since 2011 or 2012
Should I look elsewhere for a new backup program.

thanks..

Well, Aconis have left its roots and focus is no longer to provide a backup solution. They have jumped on the "cyber" security bandwagon and left those who just needs to do backups behind.

Security against criminal activity is very important, but so are backups. Dropping their backup product line and replacing it with an all-in-one solution is a bad decision for their customers. There is no good reason they could not continue selling backup licenses in parallell to their security subscriptions.

Totally Agree!

Oh well I found a great new software that's been right in front of me for years, maybe even longer then ATI.
