Loss of files with archive and combining two different computers' files when recovering files

Thread needs solution

I archived a few files yesterday, but when I realised that more files than anticipated had been impacted, I tried a recovery from the same computer. I have two separate computers on the same account. When the recovery happened, it combined the files from both computers onto the computer that I wanted to recover. Also, there are still files missing even though some others were recovered.

On looking at the activity, the last full back up of the computer in question was in late March, which would help if it was available. However, it is not available for recovery. Surely the last full back up should be available?? There had been some failed backups after the last full backup.

Anyone have a suggestion on how I can recover my missing files??

Clive, welcome to these public User Forums.

Sorry but I haven't had any reason to use the archiving feature of ATI so have no experience with this.  I am assuming that it is the actual archiving feature that you mean here because my understanding is that there isn't actually a direct recovery method for this, you would need to download a copy of the archived data then copy any files manually.

If you mean Backup rather than Archive, then this is different but there should be no combining of data from different computers unless you have chosen to do so!

Perhaps it would be best to ask you to give more details of exactly what you are trying to do here, what type of data is involved, where stored etc?  Screen images would offer the best clarity.

Acronis messaged to say that I needed to archive to free up space otherwise it wouldnt be able to backup. So I archived some files and after that i noticed that the some files were missing. I recover with what I thought was the last backup, but still many files were absent.

So there is an archiving function, it is just unclear of where they are archived.

Clive, where did you archive your files to?  The choices offered are either an external drive or to the Acronis Cloud.

Acronis messaged to say that I needed to archive to free up space otherwise it wouldnt be able to backup.

Where are you backing up to when you got the message?  Freeing up space would apply to the destination storage drive for the backup so what files were on that drive and were these the files you archived?

There are two places the archived files could have gone to: Acronis and iCloud. I have checked both folders but alas, none of the files are there.

Clive, the next option is to look at the Demon logs which are created by the archive operation.

There is a new MVP Assistant log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools page..

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

Thanks Steve. I managed to do as you suggested, but in the log I see all my files that have gone were deleted from my computer on the 28th April. I still have no idea of why they would have been deleted. Is there any recycle bin for Acronis? I dont see them in my recycle bin on my computer.

I dont see .tibx files in my file folder, but there is one on iCloud for .tia files, but that doesnt have any files in it that have been deleted. In fact, it has only two entries which were entered about a week before the other files were deleted.

Any further ideas of where I need to look?

Thanks again for the help

Clive, if the files have been deleted, then unless you have an older backup that still contains them, you are out of luck.  The only other option would be to try a file recovery application in the hope that the space on disk where the files were stored hasn't been overwritten or reused for something else.
