Question for review

Thread needs solution

I have been requested by Acronis to do a youtube review about acronis. I installed the software and have some questions:

  1. Why should I use Acronis Virus protection instead of Windows Defender which has a good reputation?
  2. How do you block malware domains? Do you reroute the traffic or is it kind of DNS block?
  3. If I just want to have a backup solution why is an AntiVirus solution already bundled?
  4. Why do I need 14 Background processes even if Threat protection is disabled entirely?

Heinz Andres,

  1. Great question!  One for which I have no answer.
  2. Another great question, one for which Acronis has not made known.
  3. Another great question, one for which many Acronis users are asking as well.
  4. My guess is that because of the need for instant gratification in today's world, without all these services running in the background, pauses in your selections would be necessary and it is anticipated that that would be totally unacceptable.

1. Why should I use Acronis Virus protection instead of Windows Defender which has a good reputation?

This is what everyone would be asking and Acronis needs to provide a response. They might say that while Windows Defender is adequate for some, there are better AVs out there, among them BitDefender (which appears to be the one used by ATI).

3. If I just want to have a backup solution why is an AntiVirus solution already bundled?

Good question. I would say that like any software company, Acronis is acutely aware of the need to stay relevant and ahead of the competition. Even before the move to a subscription model, they seemed driven by marketing and the need to release a new product every year with perceived extra value. I'm sure many long time users would have preferred them to focus more on refining their core product.

Bundling an AntiVirus solution is no doubt designed to appeal to the masses who don't have the time or inclination to find separate solutions. Of course it has the opposite effect on power users who want more control over their software.

It should be noted that Antivirus is not included in the Acronis True Image Essential product, but is bundled in the installer as trialware and from reports on this forum still results in unwanted running tasks and memory usage.

4. Why do I need 14 Background processes even if Threat protection is disabled entirely?

Exactly, the program and installer should be modular so that unneeded components are not installed.

I have ATI 2021 b30480 installed with AV turned off. Task manager shows 14 processes using 224MB of memory. I also have Macrium Reflect 7 free edition installed, which has 3 running processes using 6.5MB of memory!

For the record, I have persevered with ATI's bugs and deficiencies since 2010. I guess I've just wanted it to work. We'll see what happens when my subscription expires.

I am in general agreement with the response by @Enchantech.

I object to having to install components that I may not wish to use. I also believe there should be a separate installer for the new protection features (the installer is 777 MB, whereas the one for the most recent version of ATI 2020 was only 601 MB). Many budget Windows devices are still be shipped with only 32 or occasionally 64 gig of non-upgradable storage.
