Stuck on creating a backup of ubuntu with 2021 acronis
I recently upgraded to 2021 acronis for the use of backing up an ubuntu image. Ubuntu is the only OS on the machine. I tried using the bootable media that acronis creates. I tried using the ISO with a bootable usb. The result is the same. I select the ext4 hardrive and click proceed. It says preparing data and never does anything else. I have tried multiple harddrives to save the backup to. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Eric, more questions than immediate answers here:
Which type of Acronis Rescue Media have you been trying here?
For the ATI 2018 & later version rescue media, there are 3 different versions available:
Simple: created based on your Windows Recovery Environment for WinPE media.
Advanced: created based on Windows ADK (or AIK for earlier OS versions) - WinPE media.
Advanced: created based on a small Linux distro OS (BusyBox) or created from the .ISO CD image download from your Acronis Account page.
Obviously, for the above using the Acronis Bootable Rescue Media Builder tool can only be done in Windows with ATI 2021 installed.
What BIOS boot mode is being used by Ubuntu on this PC? Is this a UEFI boot machine or is it a Legacy boot one?
What size of disk is involved here?

Eric, I have just done some of my own testing with an older MSI laptop that I have Ubuntu 21.04 installed on in Legacy boot mode.
I first attempted to create a backup using ATI 2021 #39216 WinPE rescue media, and like your experience, it sat showing 'Preparing data' for over an hour with no sign of making any progress to actually begin the backup!
I cancelled the ATI backup, swapped the boot.wim file out and replaced it by one from Macrium Reflect Home 8 then booted the laptop again to the MR application.
MRH 8 had no problems backing up Ubuntu 21.04 in just under 6 minutes with no delay while preparing data etc!
See screen shots below from using MRH 8.
