System clone without VSS?

Thread needs solution

Dear all,

I have the following problem.

Whenever i create a clone or image i get the annoying VSS-errors. So to get around this i was thinking of removing mine system (boot-hd) and installing it as an external drive and use it thus on another computer and clone it there to another drive.

Will i with this setup get around the VSS-problem? Since the original boot-hd is now not active and just a normal external drive.

I also read when thus using the original boot-hd and making clones from there and turning VSS of and choosing Acronis snapshot, will not work ok if a system (boot) hd is involved? I don have any databases on mine system. Just a normal WIndows 10 os with applications, nothing extreme.

Is mine thought right? This is really annoying, because i have tried numerous backup-software all hang after a certain time. So i thought i give True Image a try, but also the same....and i really need the backup in case now something happens with mine system....

Thx :)

If you are seeing VSS errors when using various different backup applications then this would indicate that there are other issues at work here beyond the software being used!

I would recommend downloading the Acronis VSS Doctor tool (link below) and using this to identify what actual VSS issues are present - the tool will offer to fix some issues if it can, so you should allow it to do so!

Without knowing what actual issues are present, it is impossible to say whether attempting to backup without using VSS would be successful or if the backup image created would result in a valid bootable system disk if restored!

I would not recommend moving the HDD to another PC to do a clone or backup as this could introduce other factors!

Some areas to look at:

How much free space is available on the HDD you are trying to backup or clone?  There should be a reasonable amount of free space as this is required by any snapshot function such as VSS - having too little free space will cause issues!

Have you checked the HDD for any file system or disk errors?  CHKDSK can be used for any partitions which have a drive letter assigned, i.e. CHKDSK C: /F for the main OS partition, but other hidden / system partitions are not so easy to check, so it can be best to use any diagnostic tools provided by the HDD maker to check the whole disk surface and operation.

If you create the bootable Acronis Rescue Media and use this to boot your PC from, you can attempt to create a Backup or Clone from that offline environment, thus eliminating any issues that may be present in the Windows OS.

Hello Steve,

Thanks a lot for your kind help.

I see value in your points, i will try them out and let you know.

Thx a lot! :)

Hello Steve,

Got it solved, thx.

It was a combination of factors, too little diskspace,  and chkdsk running from gui/cli, (gui did not reveal the exact error, the cli did it) so i could take specific action

So it took a little time, but all is working and besides having free backup tools which were dealing with the same problem and same solution, i did not regret buying True Image :)

Thx!

Glad to read of a successful outcome - thanks for the feedback!
