True Image Restore Issue
Hi,
I hope someone can help me; I took an Acronis True Image backup of a PC that would only boot to the Windows Recovery screen; this backup appeared to work correctly and a .TIB file of 43GB in size was created.
When this file is opened, it can see the Recovery and EFI partitions, but it cannot open the Windows partition. When I try to restore this partition onto another drive I get a number of errors. I have a log file attached that appears to mention a number of issues have been encountered;
0xC75257350CE0FA0F - A format/resize error
0xF5F8CBCF76155639 - The archive is corrupted.
Only a small number of files are required from the drive, so I was hoping that the file folder recovery would work but it could not see any files on the partition.

Steve Smith wrote:William, your restore log shows you are using one of the very earliest builds of ATI 2021 with build 30290 - there have been 6 further builds released since that one!
You do not need to restore the whole .tib file to another drive if you only want to recover a few files.
Assuming that you have ATI 2021 installed on your PC, then double-click on the .tib file in Explorer which should then allow you to browse the contents and see if you can drill down to the location where the files are held.
See KB 65547: Acronis True Image 2021: how to restore files from a backup (Windows) and scroll down the page to 'How to restore files in File Explorer' which you should find easier to use if only wanting to recover some files, allowing you to use normal Copy & Paste commands.
Note: you should be using ATI 2021 build 39216 which is the most recent one available and fixes many issues found in the earlier builds!
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the information; I have tried the three recovery methods Disks, Partitions, and Files recovery. Acronis appears to detect the size of the partition as 73.1GB, but it cannot restore any data using a partition or disk restore. The error I get is a format/resize error.
When I use the file restore method, it does not show any content inside the drive. I have tried this using the bootable CD and application but cannot see anything on the partition.
I have attached screenshots of what I have tried and what errors I get. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

William, have you updated your copy of ATI 2021 to the latest build version 39216 as mentioned in my initial response? There have been lots of 'bugs' in the oldest build that have since been fixed in later builds.
Also, have you tried simply double-clicking on your backup .tib file in Explorer and if so, does it open to show you the contents and allow you to navigate through the folders etc?

Hi Steve,
I am using the latest version of ATI Build 39216. Below is what is seen from the File Explorer.

William, was this backup created on this same PC, and using the same version of ATI, i.e. 2021? If so, then the backup log for this backup image creation may throw more light on why no contents are being shown?
There is a new MVP Assistant log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools page..
If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.
If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) then look in the Demon logs.
Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.
The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

Hi Steve, this image was created using the bootable USB; the backed-up partition did have some issues before being backed up as it would not boot up; it would keep booting into windows recovery mode despite running CHKDSK and other BCD/EFI repairs.
I still think there is data on the partition as the Acronis image file is quite big. I only need a small subset of the files. I have attached logs MVP assistant. The MVP assistant appears to be throwing errors about detecting the OS and format/resize errors

William, thanks for the logs - these are confirming that there are issues with the backup image and that this is corrupted, probably because the source file system was corrupted when the image itself was captured.
If you still have the original drive the image was captured from, then it may be worth trying to connect that drive to another PC and see if you can access the files that you want directly from it? If that isn't possible, then try running CHKDSK /F on the drive to see what errors this finds and fixes.

Hi Steve, I have access to the original drive but it has since then been wiped. Is there anyway to recover individual files? I have seen issues with Acronis reading partitions on a GPT format is there any way around this? The files are the most important not the OS.

William, unfortunately unless you have an earlier backup of the wiped drive that may contain the files you are after then this is probably a lost cause!
Has the drive been used since being wiped? If not, then drive recovery tools may be able to find and recover some files providing the drive wasn't wiped using a security tool employing multiple passes to prevent forensic recovery!

No the only option I have right now is to try and recover from the TIB file. Do you know if there is any company that specializes in data recovery from .TIB files?

William, see forum topic: Recovery of corrupted TIB files containing important data - and try contacting the author of that topic, TIBGuy to see if he can help you?
